JOINING THE TEAM

My advisor gave me some exciting news; I've been invited to join Professor Antlerhead's team of student researchers...as a freshman! All of the other assistants are either juniors or seniors, so this is a really big deal.

I'll get full access to state-of-the-art equipment and also to the professor's research database. (Fenton points out that I simply could've hacked into his computer for the latter, but I'm much too ethical for that.)

I'm sure you've heard of the professor as he's been at the forefront of heavily publicized cloning breakthroughs. Some rivals accuse him of hogging the media spotlight, but it's not his fault that his published scientific papers come with movie deals attached.

Congradulations, Lindesfarne!
Being a research assistant is a lot of good, hard work, and to top it all off, you're the youngest R.A. they've ever had!
I'm sure you'll enjoy almost every minute of it.

Congratulations, Lindesfarne! And, considering Prof Antlerhead is a herbivore, this should be an opportunity, not a danger. My son parleyed an undergrad assistantship into a full ride for his PhD, and an eventual professorship in exactly his chosen subspecialty. His cooperating professor gave him full credit and publication rights for his work. Some of his associates were unlucky / foolish enough to take positions with carnivores or, worse, scavengers. Everything they did ended up in print -- but under the prof's name, as his work. Some of these guys make R.L. look charitable. The "Groves of Academe" are often more dangerous than The Wild. Passive defense, like rolling up in a quilly ball, won't discourage some academics -- theyve developed incredibly thick skins (and thicker heads

) over the years.

I know it depends on the university, but my brother's experience was of a lot of hassle when his Prof departed, nearly having to re-start his post-grad work.

Maybe Prof Antlerhead wants an R.A. with a history of dealing with herbivore-carnivore relations. You certainly need to pay attention to what the University Rules have to say about what happens to R.A.s whose Profs get predated.

Faked data!! If Prof Antlerhead is not able to clone, Tell me, Lindsfarne, what do you think is the true story of your adoptive sorta-relatives, Corrie / Dale and Mary? _Grant_ed (bad pun) that was a different lab, in another time and place, with rather terminal results for the research team. That might explain why their data is not available, so that Prof A's work seems like original, ground-breaking stuff (even though he's not a mole). But it still has to raise questions, doesn't it?

I'd say congrats, but now that you've taken on the task of bailing this phony out all I can say is watch your back (even with the quills).

If all else fails...get help from your roommate.

The fear alone would be worth it;-)

Being a mix between a squirrel and a fox, I would find it hard to professor unless they are omnivores, and I'm sad to say that there aren't many of those around.
You say your professor faked data? How very unscientific! If I were you I would bring it forth for the world to see.
