While back at home Kell struggles with the prospect of losing her best friend (or at least having to share her), I’ve been given access to everything the birds know about instinct loss and how humans affect it.
All along I’ve been researching it from a genetic standpoint, while the bird scientists saw it as a “disease” requiring a “cure.” It certainly seemed serious when the portal was thrown out of balance around the time of Danielle’s wedding, and species all over the world began losing their instincts.
Thing is, no disease spreads that fast, and there was no vector to explain it. It had to be something that all creatures already shared on a genetic level, and the presence of humans was simply a trigger.
Here at Beige I’m given free lab time as part of my master’s degree studies, so I’m able to pursue this line of research. The birds did accumulate a lot of data that I’m able to apply to my findings which are leading in some promising directions. Hopefully (for both worlds) I’ll be able to pin down to exact mechanisms in play.

It's nice that Aby has a boyfriend but I was wondering. What does he do for a living? Does he rent or own the place he lives.

It would be nice if you could reverse the instinct lose in those on your side of the portal. I think the lose only happens when the balence is off on your side of the portal. When their is an exchange the instincts go from one to the one going to your side of the portal. In other words when the trafic is more to the human side their is no lose. When it's to your side then it happens. When someone goes to the human side the instincts are stored in the portal. When they go to the Domain side. the instincts go to them. When to many cross to your side others start losing their instinct.

Hey its me again. Lindesfarne, how are you enjoying collage life doing with your research? Also , ever since you got that "funding" from the Group have you got any urges to do some implusive buying? Impulse buying? No, I don't really do anything on impulse.

Yes, MLP is very popular here. It's a reality show with an all-equine cast.

I think it may be time for some lateral thinking here. For example, you are posting in what appears to be the English language here. But there are thousands of languages in the human world, and it is trivial to show that the number of possible languages is nearly infinite. For another instance, I know that the history of your world contains an "ancient Greece"; we have an ancient Greece in this world, too. For these, and many other reasons, I believe the links between the two worlds are such as cannot be explained even by the furthest fringes of any science known to the human world, or, as far as I know, yours. History is, as some of our human scientists put it, a “chaotic system”, and such parallels ought not to exist. (The hypothesis that it is the Group that is responsible would appear to be excluded by their own confusion.)

Something appears to be going on that falls under the heading of, in the most literal sense of the word, metaphysics—something that links together the fates of the two worlds in a way that cannot be defined in terms of simple material causation. In the absence of further data, I think the instinct-loss problem may be bound up with this linking influence.

Hi Lindesfarne,

Since I don’t know what the exact information (data) that the Group has given you I don’t know how well they followed the scientific method or if the data was accumulated as they observed and noticed but randomly. I do know that in normal science you have a control group and an experimental group. This however poses a problem for you since if you bring in (I think it’s more than one or two?) Humans it affects your entire world all at once. This type of testing would not be good to say the least. How about doing experiments to see what genes are kicked into gear by sending Domain residents (in lead lined containers) to the Human side, using consenting volunteers. Mrs. Aura picks them up and you could cross over to analysis the genes. This predisposes the idea that this test will not disrupt the Human side due to Instinct Gain. If the Group has a lot of data already this might not be needed or done after other ideas have been worked out.

Anyway hope you have fun with the mysteries of the universe.

You're correct; their methods were somewhat dodgy, but the data collection was massive and rigorous. It's given me a lot to go on.

Have there been any studies on the effects to our world when there's an imbalance on our side? It would be strange if it only affects your side of the portal.

Also, when Danielle came over, she was just replacing her Domain self so there would have been no imbalance over there. But what about when you came over? As far as we know your counterpart is still alive and in your world. Shouldn't that have caused an imbalance? Or was the imbalance problem not as significant then and been getting worse over the past 15-20 years?

I think there has to be an exchange to prevent an imbalance. So when the human Danielle was flung thru the portal one was made. I think it was the other 2 who came thru a diffrent portal that tip[ed the scales cousing the severe imbalance. Even sending them back could not reverse it.
