Sunday, September 26. 2010GETTIN INK DONERudy, Rudy, Rudy. My brother has shown remarkable growth in the maturity department since our parents got married and we were thrown together as siblings. I no longer worry about him pulling impulsive, ill-considered stunts that backfire on him (like, say, oh...stowing away on the space shuttle). Then he decided to get a tattoo. I haven’t heard the whole story yet; I’ve just gotten pieces of it. (From Fiona, of course.) It seems that Rudy, without consulting her, decided to get a tattoo of Fiona’s face on his chest. That last detail was kind of redundant, since the chest/tummy region is the only area a canine has that isn’t covered in fur. He was taken aback when five-year-old rabbit Wendell Luckyfoot entered the tattoo parlor. Little Wendell has grand designs on being the Easter Bunny someday, to the point of using whatever means are necessary to achieve it. Rudy was able to handle him back in April, when he and Fiona returned him to his grateful mom. Wendell intended to get the “Easter Bunny’s” signature shades tattooed on his face; a rather extreme demonstration of his ambitions. Of course he’s way underage, and the store owner never would’ve done anything without a responsible party’s consent. Rudy, who knew Wendell’s full name from the Easter incident, looked up his phone number online and called his mom. That’s as much of the story as I have at the moment. Tattoos are probably more common in the human world than they are here. Only a few mammals lack fur (elephants, rhinos, hippos, pigs, naked mole rats) and birds are covered in feathers. Fish have scales, and reptiles and amphibians show little interest in the procedure. (Some shelled species have pictures and designs carved into their shells, which is a related mode of expression.) Can you confirm this about humans? Do you have any tattoos? Trackbacks

I'm old fashioned. No tats for me.
And having been through so many changes in my life, what would I want permanently attached to me? Well my changing family, but that is different. Also some tats can disqualify you for some jobs. The general public does not strongly distinguish gang tats from other tats, and some store managers and other people who hire someone for a public position do not want to turn customers off. So no visible tats has been something of a rule in many places. No I don't feel the need for one. But their are some who take it to an extreame. They have tattoos that cover their whole arm or leg. Some even have tattoos that cover 70% or more of their bodies. Anyone who does that have health problems.
I have no tattoos personally: I am massively overweight and what is referred to here as 'skin art' would not improve my looks.
Many humans have them, many do not. As with ear notches, they began here as a method of determining whether you were one of 'us' or somebody 'else'. While many tattoos are are artistic representations of real or fantasy creatures (the Japanese are past masters of this art), many of them are merely designs inked in black, reminding me of what are referred to as 'prison tattoos.' That is, they look amateurish which is the last thing I'd want to be part of my daily existence for the rest of my life. If you (or Fiona) want to talk Rudy out of his tattoo, just ask him to think what what Fiona's reaction will be to have her own face looking back at her when she and Rudy marry. Even worse, ask Rudy to consider what would happen if he gets the tattoo and then he and Fiona break up for some reason. It'll certainly put any other female at edge in taking him seriously when he tells her that she's the only woman for him! Better yet, maybe show him a picture of an older individual who got a tattoo when they were younger. From what I've read tattoos don't age very well.
Jup, ask the mermaid on my grandpa's upper arm about - she looks like cured.
I think it's a generation thing. I'd read an article once, that said about 50% of people in their 20s have at least one tattoo. I shared this with my brother-in-law, and he went on a rampage saying how horrible it was, and nobody would hire someone with a tattoo for a serious job. After hearing that, I predicted (and was witnessed) that his daughter would get tattood as soon as she was able to do it without permission. I have seldom been so right.
I personally don't have any tattoos, but I have plenty of friends who are inked. It's fairly common here. I personally can't stand needles, myself...but well, when I give blood I tend to look away when they stick it in me (and it hurts!)
Tattoos are very common here, as are piercings, and other forms of body modification. We even practice branding here, but I suspect that is more common among herd animals on your side, Lindesfarne.
I myself have two tattoos and eleven piercings. Most people I know have at least one tattoo (I am in my mid twenties) and, myself, have a few. One of my best friends is a tattoo artist when he's not traveling overseas as a business consultant. (He is also a minister!) I work at a progressive company, and I am not aware of any stigma against tattoos. Half the staff (including senior staff) is tatt'ed and pierced and or has hair dyed strange colors. But we're all artists, and it seems like it is tolerated, if not expected, for us to look eccentric despite our very savvy, professional, business-minded approach on the job.
Tattoos are sometime referred to as belonging to a group like gangs and in some contraries tribes or clans. In military tattoo parlors are common around bases.
Tattoos are used by people who travel a lot as a forget-me-not to remember the places they've been. Some people over here get tattoos. In the past, it was pretty much limited to working-class men. More recently, some women and middle-class folk have gotten them. But in the words of one talk show host, tattoos are still seen my many as "a mark of an uneducated individual."
I'm sure Rudy will end up walking away from this one without one, though. None myself: as an artist, I'm never quite satisfied with any design I come up with.
However, I did design a couple for my late brother..... Well I thought about getting a tattoo when I was young, but I am a private person. So I was going to get one where my bathing suit would cover it. I figured the only other person who would see and have to live with it would be my wife someday. So maybe when I did find that someone we could get matching tattoos or something. Turns out the lady I have been married to for the last 10 years does not like and never has liked tattoos. So I never bothered spending the money.
Tell your brother that the worst thing you can do is get a tattoo for someone else. Best way to doom a relationship before you are married is to get something like that behind the girls back no less. we get one on bottom of foot if we sell our bodies to science numbers most of the time good money for almost nothing
Lindesfarne, you wouldn't know about this, but some of us with fur do have tattoos on furred regions; we just shave, get the tattoo, and let the hair grow back...it's sort of a private statement (akin to the humans who get tattoos where their clothes will cover them).
And I'm glad a human mentioned branding, as I've heard some herbivores are into that. It's meant as some kind of statement, I think. I've even heard of carnivores getting a brand...these are radicals who don't eat meat by choice, like Rudy's friend Bruno (well, except Bruno's not a radical, he's just made a personal choice that he's not forcing down anyone else's throat). No tattoos or brands for me. I like my stripes the way they are, thank you very much. Ironically, there are some humans who get tatoos that emulate animal markings, in an effort to appear more like a particular animal.
I could be an unemployable otter, with face markings that match my call sign.
Rudy did the rright thing.by not having the tattoo.
How is edgar doing with hunting practice. Ah, the impulsiveness of youth. Both the young bunny and your brother appear to both want to show how grown up they are, yet still display just how much they have to mature yet. Still, I am sure Fiona will show him the errors of his ways, in the manner that girlfriends have used for centuries. I'm not sure what exactly that is, but if Rudy has some sense of self-preservation, he will give up the idea quickly.
No tattoos for me, for various reasons. One of the main reasons is I'm from an old-fashion family, and tattoos really aren't something we are big on. humans have been know to get tattoo's everywhere. from the tops of there heads to the bottem of there feet including Eyelids and reproduction areas. it's not a very sane species but this is a small minority. most will a tattoo or more in a common ares the arms the chest, back or leg if they get a tattoo at all. there is no point in sending picture as they are not something to be viewed by the faint oh heart. human tattoo's have gotten to the point were humans have found ways to remove them other then letting time takes it's course to break them up over the years.
by the way did Fenton ever tell you about George's tattoo? back before I came to this world I had a friend in the human world who mention that certin religons in the human world have rules aginist tattoos. the friend in question was Jewish and apperently humans world Jews see tattoos as going aginist what god wanted you to look like. I'm new to this world so I'm wondering about how such dogma is different here. Lindesfarne, I have a question, in the human world jews and muslims aren't allowed to eat pork but are there any rules aginist pigs converting to these faiths in this world? just asking
Will the Jewish & Muslim faiths don't allow the eating of pork it would not suprise me if their are those in each faith who do eat pork on a regular basic. I like bacon from every so offen. I also know a girl from a jewish family who thinks bacon makes everything better.
You will find people in every walk of life who go agenst the laws of their faith. Human flesh is not kosher or halal, but lots of humans are Jews and Muslims. Pigs might favor a religion that forbids eating pigs. It would be interesting to see how religious predators interact with prey species they can't eat. A Jewish wolf who kept kosher would have a pretty short list of prey he could hunt.
Like others have said, no tats for me. Also, I'm not attract5ed to females that have 'em.
