HOT TIME, SUMMER IN SILICON CITY

We're still enjoying the honeymoon, decompressing from the drama which seems to have been a constant presence for us since we announced the wedding date. Considering all the things that have happened, including Tree's near-death experience in the flood and the revelation of Fenton's mom's vampirism, a few days free of stress is a relief.
We're on a package tour of Silicon Valley, and a bus takes us around to all of the legendary sites of geekdom. I'm usually the only female on the bus, and I can tell that the other passengers assume I'm an ignorant companion of Fenton. I make a point of asking the guide the most difficult questions I can think of. Then Fenton asks a difficult question, and I answer it.
We made a few friends on the tour, and spread the word about Hare Link. We've eaten at some romantic seaside restaurants, with nicely salty insects. There's one more week before we go home, and we feels there's lots more to see.
We're sending pictures back to Tree to upload into our home computer. She missed the wedding, of course, but we brought along a small part of her: a thimbleful of her sap.
To all of the married folks here: where did you honeymoon?

Is Rosicrucian Park (home of the Rosicrucian Order and the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum) one of the legendary sites of geekdom? Or is it associated with a different type of geek?

Several years ago, I visited a friend in Silicon Valley. I spent a lot of time at the Egyptian Museum and Mission Santa Clara. I also made a side trip to San Francisco in order to see Mission Dolores. However, I couldn't stand the Tech Museum because of all the noise -- I had to go outside every half hour or so because the cacophony hurt my ears. [I suppose I'm an art and history geek, not a science geek. Don't suppose that there's just one kind of geek!]

In your world, how complex is noise control? We humans can only hear frequencies from 20 Hz to 20 kHz -- the frequencies that can be heard in your world are much wider. How does that range limit technology?

As one might expect there's an enormous hearing range, even between Fenton and I! I'm not sure if that limits technology or if it has forced it to seek solutions not required of humans. Danielle would probably have a better perspective on that.

MicroTalon's co-founder is indeed in the geek hall of fame. I'll refrain from any further comment on that.

I lived in Silicon Valley at the time. We went to Lake Tahoe, and on the way back swung through Mendocino.

Aloha! We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon.
We spent a wedding night at a motel that was having a Dark Shadows convention -- we did not know that it was happening until we got there -- far too tired to join in, but appreciated the elevator encounters.
Hawaii is just beauty. Only Yosemite is more so, and I suspect I would take longer to get bored of the islands.

I think Fentons mother is going to be getting a call from Herd thinners very soon with a job offer. They are about to go into the BLOOD supply buisness. One of her benifits may be free lunch on working days.

Was that Stephan from Ozy and Millie riding the tour bus on Saturday? If so, it suggests a temporal disconnect somewhere along the way since he ran away to The Valley in 2001.

Geekness: Does the popular stereotype of "geek" in the Domain-verse always wear glasses? What about cave-dwelling species that lack eyes? (Actually, I thought that cave-dwellers, who lurk in their parent-species' basement all the time, would be a geek stereotype.)

Mrs. Fuscus: I take it that the Domain-verse lacks laws that prevent preferential or punitive employment practices based on ethnic origin?

Those laws are often hard to enforce. When there are so many plausable reasons to fire someone, including whim, the burden of proof often falls on the resource low unemployed.

The laws must be there, but as with certain "lists," there are perspectives one just can't get justice for, except through luck.

We were very poor college students in 1971 with a $100 budget for the honeymoon. We stayed in a cheap motel the first night, then camped our way through Idaho and then down to Yosemite and back up through San Francisco, where we slept on the floor of my parents' friends' home.

We had a modest honeymoon on the beach. I wanted to take her on a cruise on a steamboat down the Mississippi, but one look at the cost sort of lowered our expectations. We ended up staying on the Georgia coast. There was a freak cool snap - this was in the summer - and neither of us had brought our jackets. We toured the historic sites. We'd planned to attend Christ Church on St. Simons that Sunday (it figures in the historical romance novel Beloved Invader), beneath the oaks near the spot where John Wesley preached, but arrived too late. We spent the rest of our honeymoon putting the finishing touches on our new home.

That was well over twenty years ago. When we returned a few years back, we hardly recognized St. Simons. At least we managed to visit Christ Church that trip.

A change of subject. Rudy is out of school for the summer. To make some money he should go to county fairs & craft show & paint portrits. If he can paint a picture of Fiona in a small window of a picture in less then 30 seconds he should to do one on a 8 x 10 canvase in about 10 minutes.

I'm glad you're having a good time! I wonder how Fenton's gonna feel when he gets home and his mom who said something that amounted to 'at least I don't take a lot of blood and I don't kill like a wolf!' has taken up, well, killing.

I don't think its her job to do any killing. Her job is to bring in any blood she can from Kells kills. At this time untill Kell gets her timing back she will do anything within reason to help her make the quota.

Besides she only scared the pray into running into the tree only stunning it. Kell then made the kill.

Fenton's mother has to be carefull when using her sonar. Otherwise she will give Kell a headace evry time she uses it.

They should take Coney with them. It would give her a chance at the big game.
