Sunday, April 11. 2010EGG HUNT
Francis was the star of the Easter egg hunt last Sunday (which took place just after I’d posted last week’s blog). Up against children of species spanning the whole spectrum of local fauna, he collected the most eggs.
This surprised everyone since it’s obvious that he has no outstanding physical prowess. Apparently his innate human curiosity led him to conduct a more thorough exploration of the field than those who relied on their specialized talents. Yes, it was just a game for preschoolers conducted under arbitrary rules and adult supervision, but it was illuminating. Francis is certainly going to have an interesting life here. It‘s also a reminder that there’s a high likelihood of my having human children in my future. Fenton and I certainly hope to have children sometime, although not right away. In my mind I’m thinking of my mid- to late-twenties before starting a family. If it happens that as a former human my destiny is to produce human offspring, so be it. Not that that’s carved in stone; for Danielle, the former human, giving birth to a human might be a singular occurrence owing to her more recent arrival here. ...Or to George Fennec having really, really recessive genes! Okay, that was a cheap shot. His genes aren’t so recessive. Just ask Fiona. Ask her from the next area code. Her fennec ears will hear you. Today's question: Danielle is doing the Hare Link taxes this week. Since she's busy right now I'll ask you: how are human taxes collected? Trackbacks

I am glad to see that you have come around to at least consider the possibility that your children may not be (or become) human. You currently have only one data point: Danielle (previously human) and George (pure Fennec, as far as we know) produced a child that eventually became (apparently) pure human. One piece of data does not prove a trend. It will depend on any future children borne by Danielle and yourself... and possibly Catherine Aura on this side of the portal.
On our side taxes are, for most 'working people', deducted from our paychecks before we even get them. At the end of the year, we are given a W2 Statement which says how much we got paid and how much money was deducted in taxes. We then take all of our information and go through a often lengthy process of trying to figure out what expenses can be deducted. This often leads to people going to specialized tax preparers who (supposedly) know the tax code clearly and can make such decisions. If it's finally determined that you didn't pay enough, you send the Internal Revenue Service a check for the difference between what was deducted and what you owed. I choose to pay more taxes during the year than I actually end up owing: the IRS sends me a check for the amount I overpaid. Some people who are in business for themselves (like artists and writers, for example) pay an estimated quarterly tax based on how much they expect to make. One other thing: we have a choice of itemizing deductions or not. We know from what we've seen that predators who itemize have to prove and date their kills. We can say (in effect) 'Look, here's what I made, here's what I paid, here's what you say I can deduct simply because I lived through the year. Based on that, here's what I owe/what you owe me.' If you don't have a lot of deductible expenses (I don't), it makes tax time much less of a problem. For most taxes are taken out of their pay checks. Self employeed pay the quarterly exept the ones with employes the they may pay weekly with the employees.
Some CEO'S may also pay quarterly to see how much they can save on their taxes. But then their yearly pay is in the millions. Heh, funny that little Francis ends up with the most eggs.
Taxes are collected by both the state and Federal governments over here. Most states over here charge both sales taxes on goods, and income taxes on paychecks. A few states just charge sales taxes. More well known/infamous are the Federal income taxes, which people have to file for by April 15th. Doing the forms themselves can be quite time consuming, and people sometimes have a tax service do it for them to save time or avoid errors that can sometimes result in heavy fines. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has a reputation of being quite ruthless when it comes to hunting down overdue payments. In the 19th Century, the Federal government collected money through tarrifs on imported goods. But in the early 20th Century they were replaced by income taxes. They were originally quite small, only the wealthy having to pay, but soon rose. Today, the average person in my country pays a bit over 22% in income taxes. With the Federal budget becoming greater and greater, it's been suggested that the government start collecting sales taxes, or a value added tax/VAT as it's being called, as well. In Europe, some governments charge over 20% in VAT, which has some people here wondering if they'll soon be paying over 20% more on what they buy after having over 20% more taken out of their paychecks. Lindesfarne,
What does Coney and Rudy smell like? They are hybrids. Coney: wolf and rabbit, Rudy: wolf and fox. And do all hybrids follow a pattern? We have no way of knowing this. its not like you have not smelled them, and anyone your age should know what non-hybrids/pure strain types smell like. Now Coney is likely to have her smell changed by her non-rabbit style diet. (A quote from the Spirited Away movie: have her eat our food for 3 days and she will smell like us). Ok this is a repost, but I am currious, 'Otter Coney smells exactly like a normal rabbit, except after a meal when she has meat on her breath. No doubt this is a major factor in her hunting prowess.
Rudy smells of wolf cub. There's no trace of his father's fox scent. When he does smell of fox, I know it came from Fiona. So in their cases, their hybrid nature did not result in a hybrid scent. So, as a rule, hybrids smell like what they look like.
Thanks for the reply. 'Otter that is a bit of interesting news. humans tend to work on many levels but the general trend leads to them overpower those that would oppose them through numbers, unseal tactics and tools. their curiosity leads to them discovering more and more unusual methods that allows them press what ever advantage they have including adaptability. this lets them find more resources and allows them to make there way in and environment that other cannot sort of like your Easter egg hunt. as a scavenger Francis would have been well fed maybe feed enough to feed a family will there other might not have been
I am thinking that you and Fenton have not discussed the timing of your future family. You have been slow ahd he fast in expectations for ever since.
Talk with your hunny, communicatin is a core of marriage. 'Otter We've both agreed that we're not ready to become parents right away like Tammy and Ray did.
I think you have always planed on waiting before starting a family. What convinced Fenton to wait was helping you with babysitting for Angelice's 20 kids. Even looking after Francis was a handfull.
Taxes are collected here with much wailing and gnashing of teeth on the part of the taxee. Politicians keep talking about changing the tax structure, but it hasn't happened yet!
I don't think the tax structure will change any time in the near future. In order for that to happen the goverment would have to cut its spending. That n\may only happen when HELL FREEZES OVER.
Even then, the tax collection process and the tax determination process would be the same. The amount would be different.
On a personal note, I am more for a government that can take care of its citizens than for a cheep one that abandons them. Was it Thomas Paine who said: if the government/King is not doing you any good, get another one? It was just Common Sense back then. All that said, we are going through a time of less money, and that will strain everyone. Here in CA we may have to go through a time of both less services and more taxes together. 'Otter The advice I give all newly weds is do not have kids 1st 2-3 years of your marriage. Live as cheaply as you can because once the kids come you will be. But plan and have some great vacations together. Not that having kids will ruin a vacation. You will have more fun and do more things on vacation with kids. But trust me the planning and stress is higher and the actives, at 1st will be lower key.
Taxes around here are bleed out slowly every time you get paid. Most do not mind because they think they get some of it back at the end of the year. Truth is there is a good % that gets back morethen they put in. Right now we have a leader playing the wealth envy game by saying he will only tax the top 5%. But I am going to stop there. But I have to comment on Bixyl Shuftan and say that the VAT tax would be the worse then anything we have now. I want the Fair Tax. a 23% inclusive sales tax with no more income tax. Oh and one more thing the Kell's boss would fear the IRS! They make him look tame. If you wait long enough, Rudy/Fiona may give Francis a cousin sooner. Not that there is any problem with that.
'Otter Actually a potential pup to Rudy/Fiona if they were to hook up for good would be Francis' nephew. Fiona is Francis' half-sister from the same father, George.
Odd "Lindy" mentions George having "really, really recessive genes!," Fiona was born as basically a dead ringer for a regular red fox like her mother and her father's genes didn't result in her big fennec ears until she was a teenager. Quite recessive indeed although hopefully Francis dodged that genetic bullet as a human would look quite silly with ears that big...or get elected president with them. rimshot With Rudy being 1/2 Red Fox, 1/2 wolf, and Fiona being 1/2 Fennec, 1/2 Red fox. Would their potential offspring be 1/2 Red fox, 1/4 Wolf, and 1/4 Fennec?
Probably with a tendency to take after Fiona? It seems the females in the parents' pairings had stronger genetics. Hopefully so, Fiona's a looker. Rudy is lucky. Go Team Fox!!! I've been reviewing some of the blog, and some of the twitter because of a comment made in our world.
You do know that the birds (back in about November 09) decided that they did not need to visit Francis because they could just take your own DNA research results from your computer? It is not just us that can tap things, nor does it seem that the birds are restricted to this blog. 'Otter Yeah, and further reading showed how much Lindesfarne knows.
She does know what Rudy has been doing as the EB. She does know that the birds were reading her computer. Lindesfarne, You do know the wolf and rabbit languages, they are home terrirory for you. Do you know Hedgehog? How and when did you aquire it? Do you know Porcupine? How and When? 'Otter Many humans imagine the IRS as a flock of vultures, though this is based on unkind stereotypes of both IRS employees and vultures. I suspect your taxes are collected by more literal scavengers.
You are saying curiosity.
You could mean intelligence. To be species chauvinistic for a moment, over here humans do have the best IQs on the planet (as measured by humans of course, who else is capable (:_)) .) If it is so that you have a genius in Francis, he might do very well. Hoping for the best for all, while not having a clue what that would be. 'Otter Hmmm, I'm guessing "a pound of flesh" is not a metaphor on that side of the portal as it's more a reality? (Same as "costing an arm and a leg"?)
A thought occurred to me, Lindesfarne, I hope you don't mind my asking a question, but in the human realm, "Take Your Child To Work Day" is next week. Do you have something similar there? (From the way I hear how RL treats his under-performing employees, he just might like the "family size" meal ...) She already suffered thru a 'take a child to work' HT style.
It's in the archives. She saved the office from termintes, and got awarded a termite head as a hunting trophy. 3/17 in 2000 on the human side archives. Not that I have memorized them, Steve regularly remembers something useful that I had forgotten. 'Otter I may remember things the Prpf. may have forgotten but I check the archives to make sure I have my fact right.
