Personally, I think he's prolonging saying goodbye to Tree. He has a great deal of affection for her, and he knows how she gets when he's away. Tree is always busy housing the Hare-Link equipment and making sure the indoor environment is just right to keep them running, but that's nothing compared to her maternal feelings toward Fenton. She wishes she could spread her protective branches over him at all times.
