Saturday, November 21. 2009HOME FOR THE HOLIDAY
By mutual agreement, we’ve all decided to step back and take a deep breath regarding wedding plans. I’ve got my gown and we’ve reserved the Unitarian church for June 5, so for now we’re not going to think about anything more until the holidays are over.
As usual, nothing ever stands still around here. Kell’s identical cousin Sheila has attracted the attention of one of Kell’s co-workers, a lion named Frank Mangle. He’s the father of Leona, part of Rudy’s hunting foursome. They met when Sheila came to a hunting competition to watch Rudy. Mr. Mangle is on the same level as Kell in the Herd Thinners hierarchy, which means they’re in direct competition. R.L. has engineered his organization as a zero-sum game, which discourages cooperation. Thus, whenever Kell wins, he loses, and vice versa. It’s to Kell’s credit that she doesn’t let that affect her relationships with the rest of the employees. (Of course, it helps that she’s one of the best!) I won’t even begin to speculate on the inner workings of Mr. Mangle’s emotions that draw him to a lookalike of his workplace rival. Kell, ever agreeable, has invited both of them over for Thanksgiving under the instruction that no one discusses Herd Thinners. Mr. Mangle has an interesting background. I’ll repeat this part of my blog of 9/30/07 when I reported on Leona’s joining the hunting team: “He’s a single father who (in the eyes of his species) works in the traditionally female role of a hunter. Kell told me the backstory: When Leona was eight, her mother died after a lengthy illness. While she’d been sick she’d been unable to hunt, so her husband Frank secretly learned to take down prey to feed his family and so that people would think his wife was still healthy and active as a predator. It was supposed to be just a temporary arrangement until she recovered, but fate had other ideas. “Mr. Mangle had become quite good at hunting, so after his wife’s death he applied to Herd Thinners and was hired. This, of course, meant that he was ostracized from his lion pride. Kell has faced similar pressures, but in Mr. Mangle’s case it caused him to develop a rather large chip on his shoulder. He’s surly toward Kell and to pretty much everyone else...except for his daughter.” And now, an additional exception: Sheila Dewclaw. This week: What are you thankful for? Trackbacks

The concept is referred to on this side as a 'love/hate' relationship. In Mr. Mangle's case, he can work out both sides of this with different people! (evil grin) This doesn't mean that he hates Kell: probably quite the contrary. It's just that their work relationship cannot be friendly, in any sense of the term. He and Kell are in direct competition and this makes 'friendship' (at least in a work environment) out of the question. I will say this: Mr. Mangle is a good father: he was (and remains) willing to buck traditions in order to provide for his daughter. This has cost him the respect of his peer group... but he continues on. He's a strong individual: without trying to push the issue, Sheila could do a lot worse.
This may end up as yet another example of what we jokingly refer to as 'Dewclaw Assimilation:' eventually, everyone who encounters your family ends up as part of it. Fiona and her parents: all have become part of your extended family. Corrie Dale is Kell's biological niece and through her, Bruno is/will be part of the family. Even R.L. has a distant tie to your family through Angelique (a very poorly chosen name!). If Shiela and Frank's relationship becomes official, then Leona becomes part of the family and through her, the possibility of Edgar ending up in the family exists as well. About the only people in Domain that we see here on a recurring basis who don't have a relationship to your family closer than friendship are Aby Eyeshine, her brother Coach Pardus, Rachel and her girlfriend Joan, Quinn and his wife Rhonda and Tammy and he husband Ray. With that kind of extended (and extensive!) family, it must be pretty hard for Kell to find prey unrelated to her in some way. You were pretty tired when you posted this. 'Direction' competition, zero-sum 'gain'. Get some sleep, girl! BTW: no question this week? "I won’t even begin to speculate on the inner workings of Mr. Mangle’s emotions that draw him to a lookalike of his workplace rival."
Answer: Because it's really funny. Don't look too far into this fans- see the MST3k theme song. That or more Dewclaw Assimilation. Resistance is futile Frank... As for things I'm thankfully for: Detroit Red Wings hockey and a nice glass of Vernor's ginger ale to drink while watching it. I'm from the Downriver area, so I guess I'll be "Motor City Mortar".
Since Lionesses are the hunters, we should replace all our Lions players with women. Hey, couldn't do worse. I am thankful for a job that is recetion proof. I am a special needs driver. We are always looking for new drivers. Sure you have to be in good health with a clean driving record. they also do a cori check to make sure you have no criminal records. The plus side you work about 2 to 4 hrs. in the morning & the same in the afternoon. Plenty on time between to do any erands. The big plus you have use of the car when not transporting students. Note. The last only applys to private transport co. & only vans or smaller vehicle.
Has anyone in your family ever had a TURDUCKEN. Thats a turkey that the breast section has ben deboned. Its stuffef with not only stuffing but boneless chicken & duck. I am told its very good. Wow, you're lucky. When I was driving for paratransit, my shifts were 10-12 hours long. I miss that job, you meet some great people doing it.
I have a split shift. 4.5 hrs. in the morning & 3.5 hrs. in the afternoon with 3.5 hrs off between. A total of 8 hrs. a day. Some days I have a midday run so I stay close to the school rather then go home.
What am I grateful for? I think you can break that down into two somewhat different groups: the personal and the general.
The personal? What remains of my health. That I have health care insurance when so many others do not. That I remain employed. That my personal life remains stable. That I make enough money to pay my bills and live in relative comfort. The general? That I live in the greatest country on Earth. (Bias, I know.) Oddly, this is an opinion I share with those who oppose my political views. The difference is that one side of the political spectrum feels that any change will lessen us, and the other side believes that some changes will make us better. That the ability to express your opinion remains (relatively) absolute. ('Relatively' only because certain statements can be considered criminal.) That, at least for some people, a disagreement can be an opportunity to discover that opposition does not have to be enmity. That which religion you follow remains a choice, even to the point of not following one at all. Rather heavy sentiments for a Sunday morning. Anyway, best wishes for your upcoming nuptials... and we'll hope for the best outcome from the Sheila/Frank Mangle relationship. Just remember: sometimes the best result is a breakup, sad as that may seem at the time. > sometimes the best result is a breakup, sad as that may seem
> at the time. You know, if they do breakup, Frank's probably gonna take it out on Kell. Not because she did anything, but simply because she'll be a constant reminder of what happened. I am thankful that I am almost finished with college. One semester to go. I am also thankful that the profession I am planning to go into is also recession proof. You cannot beat Air Traffic Control and they have a kick *** new pay scale.
Uh, I wouldn't be so sure of that. If you check back a few years there was a massive ATC strike and many of those lost their job. Also, the airlines are have a tough time right now. So much so they're coming up with more and more ways to tack on fees.
There's no such thing as a recession-proof job. 1981 strike Regan fired them, I wasn't even born then. The controllers went on strike because they were being over worked and equipment was falling apart. Not much has changed on those two fronts, upgrades to computers are slow in fourth coming. If you go on strike and you are a federal employee it is against the law and you can go to jail. The 81 controllers got lucky. Some went to work for lockheed as flight service station operators. The FAA contracted that work out to lockheed. The air traffic controllers, natco, and the faa generally dislike the republican party. Also, the federal government takes care of its employees.
Sorry for the double post but I forgot to add that the FAA is hiring 1,300 new controllers a year until 2016. Turns out that most of those hired after the 1981 strike are reaching mandatory retirement age now. In 1981 half of all federal air traffic controllers were fired. That's roughly 7,000 controllers fired of a work force of around 16,000.
I'm thankful for having a great family, good friends, delicious food that will be on my thanksgiving table (especially the turkey and stuffing) and that I have an internet conection.
Well, I can understand your slowing down on the plans. The holidays can be a hectic time. I just can't imaginne how hectic your black Friday will be. Anyway, good news about Sheila and Frank. I guess love can be found in the most unexpected places. I'd tell an antidote about my personal experiences with this sort of thing, but I don't have any. > I guess love can be found in the most unexpected places.
Well, we don't know if it's "love" yet. Considering the free-wheeling lifestyle Sheila enjoys, it could be just a fling. It could be. Unless Sheila has decided that its time to settle down. You can't have a free-wheeling lifestyle foreven. Loosing the job that let her travel al over the world helped to cut that off.
I;m thankful that you can sow what color your shirt is on the inside tag and get it to match the rest of your cloths (with tags_ so you don't look like a total goof. (For those that forgot, canine = color blind). I'm also thankful my roomate can see color to let me know what they are in the first place.
First of all: long-time reader, first time commenting. As a human and as my Thanksiving celebration approaches I am most thankful for the joy of coming back to family and friends after the fall semester of college. nudge Just got back and I find myself already haring off on an adventure to the Mall with friends I haven't seen in a while. Feels good to be home. :3
Gotta say that I do admire Mr. Mangle. To adapt and change ones' way of thinking to provide for your children is incredible. I'm sure that Frank is awfully nice once you get to know him. I'm not sure how hunting with Sheila would work out though...how fluent in Feline is she? Oh! And before I finish may I ask what you are thankful for this Thanksiving Lindsefarne? OK Lindesfarne I sew Kell stuffing the turkey. I am confused by what she stuffed it with. I can understand the meat items for the carnivors. But the veggies for Kevin & the insects for you. 1st. anything cooked with meat will taqke on the flavor of the meat. That includes the veggies & insects. I have ben told it takes longer to cook veggies then to cook meat. Would you realy eat insects that have ben cooked meat juices.
Ok this might be a stupid question as I'm not fully caught up on the series, still in 2004. But time is obiviously progressing as the technology changed between the start of the strip and now. Better computer, fiber optics, dsl and etc. They even celebrated birthdays in a few strips but even in 2004 Rudy still mentions he's 14. So are the characters not aging at all or just really slow?
You are right. If they used real time Coney would be a teenager in high school by now. Both Rudy & lindesfarne would have finished college & be married with kids.
Well I don't know about that. Lindesfarne should just be graduation from college right? If she is like me she has a major with multiple minors. Its not very smart to put all of your eggs in one basket is what I always say. The typical college student is in college for five years these days. That doesn't include a masters degree or other secondary degree program. I do agree on the part about Coney. On The Simpson's Bart passes the fourth grade thus completing ms. krabappel 4th grade but he has been in her 4th grade class ever since he passed it in the early 90's. Bart:"I kissed the teacher!" ptteaaa ptteaaa
Lindesfarne was 17 & I think Rudy was 14 in 95. That would make Lindesfarne 31 & Rudy 29. Yes I do think they would be married with kids of their own. Coney would definitly be captin of the school hunting team.
Off topic, but a thought occured to me:
Coney, Corrie, Dollie/"Mary", and Francis are all hybrids. By virture of that, their biology reads as "omnivorous"; they can eat whatever they like. Bruno, for example, is not a hybrid, nor is his species omnivorous: He switched from carnivore to herbivore. By necessity of his biology, he had a ruminant digestive system surgically installed. You are (technically) pure human. When you switched from herbivore Porcupine to insectivore Groundhog; you didn't need to go under the knife. Hypothesis: You potentially can eat anything, too, because you are, biologically, omnivorous. Testing would require... I dunno, a pack of Turkey Jerky and a free afternoon. You make a good point Xuncu. I guess Lindesfarne can eat insect cooked in meat juices. Will kell was born a carnivore she has also found she has a taste for carrets. She may also eat other vegtibles when she has to.
