Sunday, June 7. 2009CATHERINE AURA
Because of the online comic that apparently depicts my life in the human realm, I’m aware that you already know that Ms. Catherine Aura and her son Nigel disappeared into the portal to balance the equation caused by the presence of myself and Danielle in this world. I’m indebted to her, since she made it possible for me to remain with Fenton (and for Danielle to marry George Fennec). Danielle and I are two grateful former humans.
I’ve never gotten to the bottom of Ms. Aura’s involvement in this inter-dimensional business, and my basic curiosity (my default setting) is held back by a small inner voice telling me not to try. Yet, something has just come up; you humans know it as Twitter. I don’t know what role Ms. Aura is playing on the human side, but in analyzing the transmissions from the other side I’ve come across what seems to be her Twitter account: catherine_aura. Her cryptic tweets seem to indicate an interest, an awareness and even some sort of an authority over the nexus between our worlds. Even more concerning, she seems to be referring to the signals carrying this blog, although she hasn’t yet been able to read them. Yet. I’m worried and confused. Here, we assumed she was an ordinary schoolteacher until she showed up on Danielle’s wedding boat at sea. Logic would indicate that her role was a cover for something else, but then she vanished. My question this week is somewhat urgent: Can you humans see her Twitter postings? Trackbacks

I do not use Twitter (yet), so I cannot answer that. But based on the comics of the last week, I have an urgent message for you. Do everything you can to prevent your father from vouching for HIS father. I do not expect your grandpa to change, and Kevin could suffer greatly when he goes back to his old ways.
It seems at the moment that Grandpa will be moving into the Fennec boarding house, along with some safeguards to counteract his kleptomania.
Yep, the twitter postings are visible on the human side... she doesn't seem to have the feed restricted, either...
"Signals continue to originate from former home, Domain, and also from human world. Still unable to decipher. about 12 hours ago from web Maintaining surveillance via portal sensor. No activity. Previous behavior, of signals spiking on Sundays and tapering off, is consistent. about 13 hours ago from web" Yeah, she's visible from our end all right.
Thing that confuses me is how she actually got access to our computer systems. Our comic depicts her as becoming a dolphin, a species which, as far as we know, has no access to technology (I suppose that could conceivably be inaccurate, though, despite our natural curiosity). I suppose its possible that she brought some of her technology from your world, but if she did, why would she choose to give messages over such a commonly used forum? This does seem somewhat likely, given that she mentions a sensor, but again, we really don't know just how much of the technology of our descendants the birds have been able to reverse-engineer enough that they can recreate it. Judging from the other posts, it appears that it is visible to us. But "us" may not be the human world you're thinking about. Most likely we're a different one, and your human world is completely oblivious. Since your Nigel and Ms. Aura ended up as dolphins in your human world, the Ms. Aura with a twitter account may not be the same one, either. Or it might. Or it could be a human fan having fun. We do strange things for fun. Ask anyone who goes to a SF con.
A dolphin! Now, as Ms. Aura and Nigel went through the portal I did happen to see a glimpse of a dolphin tail, but I thought it was a trick of the light.
So, there is a Twitter service in the human world. Out of curiosity, why is it called that? I see them too. Why she's using Twitter, not sure.
And yes, safeguards would be a good idea. Ok, looks like she's monitoring us as we speak. I'm not sure how fast you can decrypt her messages, so I'll re-post it here:
"Sunday afternoon. Signals are increasing, as before. Latest research indicates transmissions arising from both sides of the portal." Also, she seems to be accumulating a few followers now. I wonder how long until she realizes we're onto her... 'Course, whether that matters or not depends on if she even knows her messages are showing up on there. Woops. Hate to double-post, but apparantly she's following quite a few channels. So much for the "she doesn't know her info's leaking out" theory, I guess. Never heard of some of them, but it looks like she's got quite a mix. Silicon alley forum, CBS Breaking News, CDC Emergency...
...about a half dozen sports and entertainment figures... women's wear daily... Odd, I am not able to find that Twitter account. I tried various variations of catherine_aura, but none seemed to work. Perhaps she discovered folks following her and has decided to restrict access?
Access isn't yet restricted. She just posted another tweet referring to someone called Subject A. Who the heck is that?
I can see the tweets too, now, but it's tricky. Apparently, "Subject A" is the person who's drawing the comic on the human side...and it's no wonder she's monitoring him. If the birds are trying to keep the balance and prevent instinct loss on this side of the portal, his (or her) ability to tap into our side of the portal represents a security risk.
Ummm. Lindesfarne? If I were you, I'd check to see if there are any birds watching over your brother Rudy. Didn't he have a comic for a while where he was drawing humans? That would also represent a security risk to the birds, I would think. I...have absolutely no idea. She's got Paula Abdul and some guy named Steve Agee on the followed list, but somehow, I doubt that has anything to do with it.
On a side note, I just realized that, somehow, Ms. Aura got a hold of a picture resembling her old self... on the human side. Now, since she apparantly hasn't been clicking around on the links on the comic site enough to find the this blog, I have to ask: can she draw? If not, I guess she's been checking out the print versions of the comics at one point or another. What is interesting Lindy is that the picture portraying her on Twitter is a picture as she was portrayed in the comic...(Bees find it easy to cross the portal back and forth:))
DaDrone From the latest tweets of Ms. Aura's, everything is becoming clear. She, and the rest of the birds, are keeping our society from collapsing due to instinct loss by maintaining the necessary balance between the two sides of the portal. All of the events I observed while she was here have fallen into place. I need to catch my breath.
I'm sorry that I can't be of help on this, Lindesfarne. I do not Twitter. I don't have a LiveJournal. I don't have a FaceBook entry or a MySpace page. I don't send IM's. I don't even have a cell phone. I don't contribute to that greatest of insults to the English language: texting. When I first saw the texting acronym BFF, I thought it referred to the Air Force's nickname for the B-52 bomber, BUFF. That stands for Big Ugly Fat (censored by poster, not Lindesfarne).
Now that everyone's screaming "Luddite!" at me, I'll merely point out that I've made my living off of computers since 1969. I know what they're good for, and interpersonal relationships ain't one of them. That is, of course, a generalization: the parents you award that title to (Kevin and Kell) met over the net. Then again, so did R.L. and Angelique, originally. The problem is that, when you can't see the person or their facial expressions, it becomes all too easy to hide the reality of who you are behind a facade. The only thing backing up my claim here to have worked on computers for forty years... is my word. Am I telling the truth? Am I that old? Or am I an eighteen-year-old liar trying to impress people? Bluntly, the only thing indicating that I am as old as I claim, with the experience that I claim, are the facts that this is both spelled correctly and is (reasonably) good English. Today, it appears that the younger you are, the less these things seem to matter. > I do not Twitter. I don't have a LiveJournal. I don't have a
> FaceBook entry or a MySpace page. I don't send IM's. I don't > even have a cell phone. I don't contribute to that greatest of > insults to the English language: texting. So, how did you wind up here? > Bluntly, the only thing indicating that I am as old as I claim, > with the experience that I claim, are the facts that this is > both spelled correctly and is (reasonably) good English. > Today, it appears that the younger you are, the less these > things seem to matter. Ain't that the truth. When you can't even spell the word "the" correctly, there's a serious problem. I've been using computers since '76 so I can appreciate where your coming from. Catherine Aura... that's a name i have not heard in quite some time... 20 years as a matter of fact. This could be interesting...
On another note: Lindesfarne.. it seems your grandfather is moving into the Boarding house here... I only have one thing to say... he steals any of my stuff... and he's Rabbit Stew. For all of our sakes, I hope that she doesn't mess this up. According to the histories on the comic site, your world is essentially an alternate timeline created by the birds when we... um... messed ours up. I only pray that she doesn't alter our history sufficiently that their kind never achieves sentience, or that we never survive long enough to create their technology. Unless we're actually a third alternate timeline, and what happens here is independent of the first world, I'm worried that the birds interfering with us too much could well remove your world from existence. Heck, I'm not even sure what would happen to the humans who have had contact.
Bah. I'm probably over-thinking this, and both we and the birds seem to have been fairly careful with our contact. Still, I've just realized even more so that we've got to be really careful here, especially if there are parties consciously trying to manipulate this world. Lindesfarne, I'm rather confused as to how Mr. Kindle got out on parole. Didn't he take the rap for murder? Was he let off with good behavior, or was it a reduced charge on the claim of self defense?
Grandpa was released on good behavior; something he'd never tried before until sharing a cell with Mr. Squirrel.
I'm not qualified to discuss time lines. That's kind of speculative. All I can do is analyze measurable phenomena, such as the signals that allow us communicate through the portal. Fair enough. The whole concept of time has always fascinated me, for better or worse. Regardless, without evidence one way or the other, I suppose there's little that can be done on the matter that wouldn't require jumping to unfounded conclusions.
Still, its too bad I can't get my hands on some of the records of how these machines work. The idea of finally figuring out how potential paradoxes are resolved... Ok, I'm going to stop now. Along this line of thought, danger lies. Just read her posts. Apparenly 'subject A' is Bill Holbrook.
I notice one thing in your post - you don't seem to be aware of the birds overall plan that we learned through the comic strip - the "cover for something else" involved the GBC were you aware of it? I don't know how much to say; I can't check Twitter, and I don't want a load of birds (or dolphins) chasing me
History of your world:
It was originally a human only world like ours. The humans destroyed the environment and left for outer space. Only the birds were left (because they could fly above the pollution). They developed sapience, discovered human artifacts, and learned how to reverse-engineer them. They traveled back in time using recovered human time travel technology to prevent the human race from evolving, and to embed sapience into all the animal species. They guided the animals to civilization, by introducing domestication and other "behind the scenes" control. We call this conspiracy "The Great Bird Conspiracy" or the GBC. Hrm. If that's what seeing the comic on your side of the portal has led you to believe, then I have to wonder if the person drawing it is, ahem, eating some mighty strange grass...of course, that might explain why he's able to get "signals" from our side of the portal to draw in that comic in the first place.
Traveling thought time… that is an interesting theory… but I’ve come up with a different theory on this.
Time is like a Long rope (An old saying I know but this is something different). Lets say this rope is made of 30 or so strings, each string being a different area of the physical universe. The idea you purposed was that they traveled down the rope, untied it and then re tried it together in a different matter. But truth be told there would be a much simpler idea. What if you took… one peace of string. And tugged it at one end… what happens… well that one peace of string now shows on the end of the rope (Say an inch exstra then the others). All the other rope strings remain the same, but that one peace of string has been moved up or down the rope… Not in the matter of time this would have an interesting effect, by moving the one peace of string you can reverse time in that area of the universe… but leave the rest of the universe on it’s basic timeline, unaffected by the changes in time. My theory is that instead of traveling back in time… they rewound the time space around them… back to the point where humans were about ready to evolve and they stopped it from happening. But the rest of the universe keeps traveling unaffected. This leaves room open to the idea that humans could still exist on a distant star far away from earth. Unaffected by the reversing of time that changed the Earth. Unaware that right now the planet they left behind due to it’s destruction, was brought back from destruction and is now a clean spinning, healthy planet. It’s an interesting theory… plus it would explain all the strange Signals my friends are picking up from about 1.34 parsecs from Earth . Wait a minute. Are you talking about the "Hubble planet"? The one that shows an atmosphere equal to our own. One with coloring in the atmosphere that could reflect our own...which has great hope of being an oxygen generating planet?
After all, it's distance from us has to be somewhat reasonably close for even that mighty orbit bound telescope to get such details upon. I'm not sure if it's a hubble planet... It's around Alpha Centauri if not the system itself.
What I mean is that through the Hubble Telescope, they found a few years back this planet that through it's visible situation, appeared to have an atmosphere of recycling water and other such hints to indicate that Earthen-like life may indeed be happening upon it's surface.
I heard about it through a lecture at a college hall that was broadcast. Very interesting stuff. Kind of sad that while we can look, we just can't touch...yet. Even sending a probe to it could take decades. And, that requires someone to fund the millions for building and sending such a probe.

That's very entertaining, Thomas! I love science fiction, too!
Well, if everyone (as far as we know) exists on both sides of the portal, what are the odds that this is the Mrs. Aura of the human realm instead of the Mrs. Aura from your world?
Well, judging from the inside information mentioned in those posts*, I would gather it was the former vulture writing....
Also, we can't be certain that everyone has a doppelganger on the other side of the portal. There are bound to be exceptions...... besides, from what SF I've read on the subject, it would be dangerous (or at least highly embarrassing) for both individuals to exist in the same world. However, I'm pretty confident that both Ms. Auras are ever likely to meet. Note: (As far as I can tell from the post quoted here, that is.... I'm another old duffer who doesn't 'tweet', or use anything more advanced than regular e-mail.... I suspect they called it 'Twitter' because the sort of messages posted therein tend to be featherweight in import....) Or even stranger...that they're cooperating with each other!
I'd think there would be some serious risks to that on some level, though. We know what happens here when there's instinct loss. What's the parallel development on the human side of the portal...instinct GAIN? And if so, how would this affect human society? It's hard for me to picture that as a BAD thing, of course, but if a society is built around its members not having instincts, and suddenly at least some of them start developing instincts...well, I guess I could see how that might lead to upheaval. Or at least some kind of prejudice against those who have instincts...or even that they might have to hide their instincts like some of the folk on our side of the portal hide their cross-diet relationships. Whew, this is making my head hurt. Time to go to work anyway! Catherine_aura just said she doughts the security of her transmission device. I don't believe she knows we can see her posts.
Okay, now I have a question for you!
It was brought to my attention recently that one of the most primal fears of the human race is being devoured. Many horror cliches revolve around it - vampires, were-creatures, zombies, dinosaurs, cannibal mutants, etc. Many of our most notorious serial killers engaged in eating human flesh. But in the Domain world, being devoured is a daily concern, like traffic regulations. So what do Domain residents see in their horror movies? Or is horror not even a genre there? Well, I'm not a big fan of horror myself, but one classic in the field featured a predator waking up one day to discover he'd turned into a prey animal. In fact, if I remember the details correctly, he had turned into a cockroach...and one of the smaller kind, not the giant insects that we have on our side of the portal and you apparently don't.
Come to think of it, if I remember correctly that one is a cult classic among insects (Lindesfarne, you'll have to ask Tammy about it). So there are things on your side of the portal that EVERYONE fears? That's interesting; it makes sense if you all evolved from the same basic animal. Over here, artists get real acclaim if they can appeal to everyone; horror in particular, my friends tell me, has become really compartmentalized because, for example, what I'd be afraid of as a tiger would be very different from what Lindesfarne would be afraid of. Well, I will admit that the one thing that's bugged me about this theory of world development is that the birds noted appeared to be analogues of non-sapient birds in our world. If the birds did develop sapience independently of the other species, why is it that all of the birds are not of this one type that managed to achieve sapience? Did they just enhance their own ancestors' analogues from your side and let themselves die out?
Still, I'm going to keep an open mind about this, personally. While the story does seem like something out of science fiction (which I'll admit I'm very fond of), the comic maker has yet to commit any serious errors, at least that we are aware of. Besides, barring external intervention, I find the odds of so many species evolving sentience independently somewhat... dubious. Or, conversely, if your side had been the norm, how come we're alone on this side? I mean, aside from the whole "killing off the Neanderthal" thing... Anyway, all I'm saying is that even on the chance that he's not right, something awfully suspicious is going on here. Humans have Twitter? There's a lot to this species I don't know.
Personally, I'm not a bird, I don't have the attention span of a bird (which seem to be the two species that make up the Twitterati), and my life is very boring (why the need to update my boring life?) I don't think humans tweet (they definitely don't fly, as that's a natural defense and they have been described as lacking in such), and they must have longer attention spans ... The few from our world who have made it over there must be considered absolute genuises compared to your typical human! Let's really break out the SF here. In theory there can be different forms of multiple universes. A common one in SF is good ol' alternate reality, whether it stems from tinkering with time lines or simply scooting over to the universe where you decided to have eggs and bacon on Monday instead of a bowl of cold cereal. I think this is what's known as a Level III universe.
On a more, "mundane" level is that it's possible for similar worlds to exist within the same infinite space. An identical "Subject L" could be sitting as close as 10^118 meters away. While not a parallel universe as typically shown in SF, it would nonetheless allow for multiple earths. This is known as a Level I Universe. A little dark matter here; a pinch of handwavium there, and you have a wormhole connecting two similar earths. And if the wormhole is always open, then it should be possible to have some "leakage," if both have some form of wireless communication. In either way, given infinite space, even in a Level I universe there should be a possibility of a huge "Cosmic Coincidence." Planet A has a connection to Planet B, but on Planet Z, both A and B are a work of fiction. Thus what is strictly entertainment on Z is history of A and B. I'm surprised that our "Subject C," from an advanced society with time travel, wouldn't pick up on this. The kicker is that if A and B become aware of Z, there's no guarantee that the fiction on Z will always mirror A and B. Then again, it could. Infinities are fun. Or perhaps (with a nod to the late Michael Crichton and Timeline), the people of "Subject C" do not achieve true time travel, but wind up in an alternate Level III universe to play with. Or maybe they "simply" wind up on a Level I world that looks like it's pre-human and they conspire to make it so. Here's something for "Subject C's" traffic analysis to chew on: Suppose that her class Aves did not achieve sapience through evolution but through genetic engineering of her world's departing humans. Class Aves of her world may be the only ones to "make it," as it were, but it would explain sapience across the entire class. And if all this is takes place in a Level I universe, then those original humans could still be out there, on their adopted worlds, in a similar form - or perhaps one so advanced we'd no longer recognize them as human. In which case they could be pulling the strings on "Subject C's" class just as "Subject C," in turn, pulled the strings on "Subject L's" world - and "Subject C" may be none the wiser. Isn't SF fun? Uh oh..This last post of hers....:
If Lindesfarne is indeed communicating with humans, I may need to take drastic action. Namely, Nigel and I becoming human ourselves. shudder This is bad. |
