Sunday, January 11. 2009ROOMS FOR LETI heard from Rudy that the Fennecs have a solution to their immediate money worries: they’re converting their enormous (and paid for) mansion into a boarding house. While their fortune is gone, this strategy will give them a reliable (yet labor intensive) way to get by. With Uncle Ralph and Corrie with full-time jobs, and Fiona in school, it falls on Fiona’s mother Martha to do most of the running of the house. Even though the first boarders are just moving in, she seems pretty effective at it so far. (I was sworn to keep this secret, but I’ve been made aware that everyone here knows this already: for a month Martha was transformed into a human. She was able to change back, but her experience was invaluable to me when I discovered my own human origins. So, she and I have that bond.) The mansion itself was divided into two halves when Fiona’s parents divorced. George eventually sold his half to buy Hare-Link, and when he married Danielle they moved into a much smaller tree nearby. Now, the Fennecs will house herbivores on one half and carnivores on the other. Omnivores sleep wherever they want...as usual. An odd thing about the mansion (aside from it being one of the few local residences not being either a hole in the ground, a cave or a living tree) is that it’s divided into many, many small rooms that make perfect one-person apartments. I’d assumed that a mansion that size would have huge open spaces, and while there’s couple of those the general layout is perfect for its current use. It’s as if when Fiona came into money she didn’t scale her lifestyle upwards; she just multiplied it. Good thing, too, considering. Trackbacks

Hey Lindesfarne, sorry I haven't been able to read your blog for awhile. It seems like alot has happened in your world and I wish you and the Fennecs the best of luck. It is amazing how nothing has happened between the carnivores and the herbivores. It seems two opposing sides can live together, now I just hope that us humans can learn that in time to help put a halt to this little holy farce going on. (I would rather prefer to stay here with my mate than be deployed
It's good to see that the Fennecs are able to adapt quickly to the worsening world economy. The boarding house is a good idea; I know of a few families on this side of the portal who, after the kids moved out, converted their homes to bed & breakfast style inns.
Yes, we found out about Martha's month as a human through that comic strip we keep telling you about. Which reminds me -- I've been meaning to inquire. Perhaps there are things we know about your world that you might not be aware of. Like the source of Fiona's fortune, back in 1999. If I recall correctly, those strange powers of hers were granted by the Great B--### . .. ... .... carrier lost Good to know the Fennecs are going to be able to weather this market crash. Maybe if Fiona's lucky and she keeps track of those animals that escaped she may be much better off in the long run... just think about how much more wild animals "split their shares"
Well, I am glad. I live in a small apartment myself, and I prefer it. I don't need my full library (practically gave it away when I had to move...it was huge) as I now have the web. If something breaks, I just call maintenance (I hope this doesn't cause too much headache for Martha). I live close to work and, when you figure in taxes, upkeep, etc. it is actually cheaper to pay the rent. And everything does not remind me of my dead parents...
If a huge mansion like that is divided into small rooms, by the time it is filled you should have enough income to keep the place going and have a decent lifestyle. Maybe she will even be able to hire help for running the house. Oh, I forgot my weekly question about the human world! During my brief time there I heard of something called a "zoo." What 's that like? Here, a "zoo" is a gated community.
Much the same here, only humans come to parade for the amusement of the residents and even pay for the privilege at some of the more exclusive ones. All the while, humans believe that the residents are, in fact, the ones on show.
Zoos are places where wild animals (land, sea and air) from all over the world are caged and put on display for people to see. Unlike your version, the "residents" in our zoos don't have the option of leaving. And while the larger zoos take good care of them, there are too many smaller ones that don't.
Zoos are mostly visited by children, often as school field trips, but families frequent it as well. Personally, I don't approve of such places. A cage is still a cage, no matter how nice you make it. How very interesting. We have something of the sort that is quite the source of debate. A public prison where the general public can come and view the prisoners at their liesure. One of the more heated issues is the limited ability for the visitors to throw stones and select other items at prisoners shackled in chains in certain areas.
At one time, it was rather common for such a prison to exist in many towns and lock the prisoner in a kind of device called a stock. This kind of community rehabilitation grew into larger facilities as time went by. Thankfully, kinder times have come over us and most of our modern day prisons are enclosed, private enough to only allow visitors on request and do not offer weapons of any sort to the visitors. Still, there are...somehow...a few of the old style rehabilitation centers in operation. In my opinion, it's something that needs to be phased out, completely. First, you have to remember that all non-human animals here are like Daisy...they just act on instinct, reflexes and emotion, not thought as you think. They do not have self-aware, modeling minds. In most big cities, there is a kind of park called a zoo where various exotic animals that do not normally live in the area are caged for visitors to see and admire, usually for a small admission fee.
Here, a zoo is a facility designed for the preserving and displaying of animals, which, in our world, have no sentience. Animals are either captured and brought to a zoo or born in one. The equivalent for marine life forms is an aquarium.
Wether these locations are a good or bad thing for the animals they house is a subject of ongoing debate, one which I not go into. It also has usage as a slang word for a scene of mass chaos. We have that sort of thing, just with the consent of the displayed individuals. (Please tell me you don't know about my family's experience at Animal Kingdom in Orlando.)
Actually...
Well, at least the comic had well-placed bushes for that one. Yes, we do know about that, Lindesfarne. You will probably be less em-bare-assed (sorry, couldn't resist the pun) to know that the artist who depicts your family's adventures illustrated that episode in such a manner that no parts of anyone's anatomy which could be considered 'private' were shown. Bare backs and side views (no backsides) were shown, no breasts or reproductive anatomy were.
Also, I feel that I owe you (and Terri The Tiger) an apology. I asked about the nudity taboo in your world and mentioned Rudy's misadventure in the cult of The Wild. This incident was also in my mind. It degenerated into a question about pornography. That was not my intent. You are a modest young hedgehog and I had no intention of subjecting you to that kind of question. For that, I apologize. About your previous question, no problem.
About my experience at Animal Kingdom being depicted (no matter how tastefully)... groan Actually... sorry to rub this in, but... looks like he made a two-week series out of the trip, all told.
Still, it wasn't so bad. You were depicted in the actual exhibit all of twice, in total; it focused on Kevin and the circumstances of the people in there (where they came from, the lame tram, etc.) more than anything. Ok, that, and Coney, plus one shot from after you got home... No apologies needed to me! I'm rather older and a bit less inhibited than Lindesfarne; I even know a wolf who just recently got involved in the "industry" as an editor. (That can get complicated, what with scent pairing and such, but I'll spare you the details).
Re zoos here as gated communities: I feel obligated to mention that there is more than one kind of zoo here. Some allow tours, like the one Martha is running, apparently, while others don't. And some were created specifically for older folks, to defend them and help them with basic necessities (such as food and hunting). The myriad of community types we have is downright confusing if you take them as a whole, because of the different lifestyles (i.e. diets) that must be accommodated. Imagine what would happen if older predators and older prey were housed together as a matter of course! I hear some places are making changes along those lines, but sometimes our world is very slow to change. Martha ought to win a Peace Prize if she can really pull this boarding house off without someone getting hurt! We don't usually see that kind of mixing here. First, Fiona could fix the greatest threat to civilization in 1999, namely the Y2K bug, now it looks like she could fix (or at least has the knowledge to fix, she was smart to think of the rooming house situation) the greatest threat to civilization in 2009, namely the economy.
If I were Fiona, I'd clear my schedule in 2019 ... Hey if they are looking for People to take up rooms I know Myself am looking for a new place as well as my co workers.
I myself have two younger with me, My co worker Bill is a goat who has a wife, and the other Denis, a finch, you should question him about his relationships with others first... Fiona's mom may have a problem with him. There may be some rooms available. Just show up at the mansion and ask Martha. (If you're anywhere near Domain you know where it is. It's quite a landmark, and can be seen from the Interstate highway.)
Well then Looks Like I'll have to make an appointment with them... aparently Denis already has one for tommarow... That wont end well.
Hello Lindesfarne, good to hear your neighbors were able to keep the place.
Zoo is short for "Zoological garden." It used to be they were simple cages with little reguard for the comfort of the animals. For the past half century though, there has been more effort in making the enclosures closer to their natural habitat. Zoos have also made an effort at perserving endangered species. In a nearby one a few years ago, a zebra somehow got out of it's cage and ended up in the lion one. When a lioness came over out of curiosity, the zebra kicked and bit at her and sent her retreating. The zebra was later transfered to another zoo because of it's aggressive behavior. Something I never got a chance to say last week, which struck me after reading your blog.
Corrie is really a remarkable young sheep. Most of her schooling was in predator classes, on Bruno's back. The rest was disguised as a wolf. And she graduated before everyone, even you. Not that it mattered much. She already has a career, with benefits, and had a house at one point. Self-sufficient, intelligent, charming and very sweet. I hope Bruno really realizes what he has there. I also hope he can land a good job, being trans-diet and all. Maybe he can get in on the glamorous world of landfill management. He'd make a mint. Hi everyone.
CharlieG:The question was the result of my cousin, who is a lawyer and often is prosecuting sexual-charges based cases. As it is,she wondered what were used to identify a case as such. She is sorry. My next item is about the zoos.As I have written here,I am a animal behaviorist, and I study animals in zoos that are,as they say, acting "moody". Often animals that are in zoos are indeed, healthy because of vaccines, ectera,BUT animals that live in a zoo that was once depicted in the comic that your family visited, with bars and cages, is akin to how a child going to school on alcatraz would be:bad/negative feelings,a sense of cature etc. Frankly,in my opinion, zoos should be similar to The Washington DC one, more open. Well... Dennis's interview to get a room at the boarding house didn't go well... I dropped him off yesterday and when i came to pick him up he had two black eyes... I can pretty much guess what happened... Bill and his wife wont be moving in anytime soon ether... their daughter just moved back in with them after a disastrous relationship.
My meeting with them is today however... Kyle has school so I'm just bringing Chomp by... hopefully Chomp doesn't do anything... too strange. Lindesfarne, I know this is off-topic, but I'm a little curious so I have to ask. Right now in our world there's quite a bit of chaos going on in Israel. Is a similar conflict happening over in your world?
I think the last time was sometime in the B.C era. Possibly the Jurassic Period.
I've caught up with the comic strip on our side. College is starting up agaon!
I can't posit anything really noteworthy or keen. I have to hand it to online certificate mills, though! |
