Dad’s first experience with the Rabbit Council proved to be loaded with cynicism. The other members fed him false defensive strategies, assuming that Kell would immediately obtain them. They were genuinely perplexed when that didn’t happen.
Of course, Kell has never relied of deviousness and subterfuge of that sort. With canines, it’s generally “What you see is what you get.” Speaking of Kell, she just saw another side of Gran; the side that enabled Gran to see all 36 offspring to adulthood. Gran is an unusual rabbit, which made her frustrating lifelong quest for status within the rabbit community all the more sad. She’d probably have been happier embracing an outsider identity the way the Dad did. Come to think of it, though, she did eventually run off into the Wild for a while. Fenton and I are getting ready to head back to Beige University for fall semester. As before, I’ll room with Rachel and Fenton will room with Bob Shrike. Lastly, I’ve been reading the messages posted here during the week in my absence, including the ones mentioning other dimensional portals. I won’t comment directly on them, except to say that I possess a map showing the location of the various portals around the world. Normally I would keep that fact absolutely secret, except that that map apparently appeared in a book collection of the webcomic that features the doings of my family. It was a human (Hi, Ki!) who alerted me to this; otherwise I couldn’t have known about it. The book in question is titled “Oh, the Humanity” and no, none of the portals are near Antarctica. Strange I wonder what that thing in Antartica was then... Gate way to hell? I need a drink.
Hey, Lindesfarne! Good to hear from you again...
You've been very patient with these questions from another world, so I think we should return the courtesy...You've roleplayed as a human online, you've met various members of the human world, do you have any questions or things you want to know about this world? (oh, by the way, I know it's been years, but does Danielle have any messages she'd care to pass along to anyone here? I believe the news at the time said she was lost at sea, but it's possible her family here hasn't given up hope...) I've told Danielle about my ability to connect with the world of our origins, and she's understandably conflicted about communicating with it. She told me that whatever she decides to do will be based on what's best for her son Francis. That was kind of a cryptic statement, but I didn't press her on it. She does have family back there, of course: five siblings (including the human version of Dad) and her parents.
As a scientist I'm mainly curious about the uses of technology. Over here climate change is a large issue, and from what I gathered from Nick and Ki it's also one on your side of the portal. Very true...for example, one of the big worries over having the Olympics in Beijing this year was that the pollution, smog, etc. would be very bad. It wasn't...but only because the Chinese instituted some draconian restrictions on its populace before the games.
Did former Vice President Al Gore make the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" in your world, too? You should asked her what level of Weaponry they have in the human world. I heard that the only way a humans could defend themselves was by laying waist to the other habitats. Any truth to that?
Not entirely. That's pretty much only when entire countries get involved, and at that level it's pretty damn complicated anyway. I myself prefer hand-to-hand combat, along the lines of Durnken Boxing or Copiera.
Okay, I have to ask this.. as a game designer, albeit card games - the question really intrigues me.. . in our world, we have characters such as Sonic the Hedgehog in video games. There are plenty of other various anthropomorphic creatures as well that star in other games, and some not - such as Ecco the Dolphin. Then, there are utterly weird characters like Rayman that appear and seem to have no real sense or linage to them. Do any of them appear in your own video games? Also.. while humans might not exist, do you have other creatures such as elves, drawves, etc?
I was wondering, as a Catholic...do you have a Pope there? If so, what species is he?
I have that book! It's a very good read too. Hmm, I should take another look at that map then.
Though on second thought, with the problems the balance between humans in your world and people from yours in our world, I'd be afraid of throwing things out of whack. Yes, Al Gore is indeed in our world. He's a champion of habitat preservation and won an Academy Award for that documentary.
We have a Pope, although I'm not a member of that church. He's a brown bear. Video games in our world offer a vast array of species, many of which don't actually exist. Sonic is a hedgehog, of course. No humans, however. As for human weaponry, the humans on this list could best answer Reptileus's question. Hey, Lindsfarne, if you ever feel like visiting any of the other worlds, lemme know. I'm sorta like an interdimensional Coyote. Although, it occurs to me that you might not have that term for smugglers over there, so think of me more like a tour guide for the multiverse. There's also no need to worry about instinct loss from me coming over, I've learned how to blend in with the worlds I visit, so I don't cause to much of a disturbance.
One last video game question before work calls me for the remainder of the day.. here, we have a Social Chat system called "Furcadia". It's known that our Second Life has an equivalent program on your side, but... what about that one?
What weapons do we have? Well... ok, this is going to get real ugly, real fast.
Well, or gun technology is fairly advanced. Armor-piercing rounds exist, as do fully automatic weapons. Really, you name it, we've probably tried to make it happen. On a national level, we have a advanced missile technology, including bunker-busting missles and inter-continental versions. We have a lot of tanks, fighter planes, etc., too, though the prior is considered too slow for practical use nowadays. As for our most powerful weapons... that would be atomic bombs. Basically, we use nuclear power to unleash an explosion that, if I remember right, is currently to the level of being able to wipe out a major city. We've only used them twice, though (back in world war 2, in 1945), and a number of us are afraid of them ever being used again. Mainly because we've got enough of the things to wipe out the entire planet several times over. We also have chemical and biological weapons, though we tend to frown on their use. So... yeah. We have a lot of weapons... almost too many for our own good. (Oh, and we do have bladed weapons to make up for our lack of claws, but they aren't used much any more, aside from knives by some thugs. We also use stinging chemicals that can be sprayed into one's eyes in self defense, at times.) Nifar, Fenton and I once had a significant adventure in the human world, which Ki tells me was depicted in that same book. (Fenton makes a cute little human.) We influenced the future (our futures!) so we're quite leary of going dimension-hopping so as not to impact things further.
As for Teonnyn's question, we don't have Furcadia but there was a human-themed chat site called "Skincadia." I have an interesting question:
I have two kids living with me (one adopted, the other placed under my care by the state). They both have... odd... appetites (But they are both carnivores). I was wondering if you knew of any places that serve Lemming and Ringed Seal. Kyle, my adopted son, will eat very few things, and being an Arctic fox, he prefers to eat said meat. As for the other one, Chomp (12 year old Gila Monster with an IQ of 227), likes to eat eggs a lot, I was wondering if anyone knew of something else i could get him to eat. The only other thing i know he likes is Coffee... but were trying to get him off of that. I wish I could recommend some places, but the only establishments I know of cater to insectivores and herbivores (and my knowledge of the vegetarian restaurants is several years out of date). I'm sure a Google search would turn up better choices than what I could offer. Good luck!
Huzzah for Google! now if they could only create a better dating service.
By the way: you mentioned a couple weeks ago that our process of raising meat for food sounded like your domestication. Just thought I'd mention: that word has a meaning in our world, too -- the changing of animals to make them better suited for human uses. For a lot of herbivores, like pigs and cows and the like, it meant making them better suited for livestock. For wolves, it meant making them more suited for human society (ie, more dog-like.) Cats... well, they've been sort of half-domesticated; some of the smaller ones live with us, but they're more independent than canines.
In our world, it was something of a deliberate process by our ancestors -- far more gradual than your world, largely through selective breeding and whatnot. Don't know if that is of any help, but at any rate, thought I'd mention it. Yes, domestication has entirely different contexts between our worlds. Here, without humans acting upon non-sentient species, it's treated as more of a medical condition. My research, of course, has revealed a genetic component.
I'm a longtime lurker, first-time poster, but recent events (Biden becoming the VP pick for Obama on our end!) on historical figures has made me think of an inherent link, and the presence of a certain lock-step between our worlds. Take, for example, Michael Phelps. In both worlds it's very likely that he has now taken the Olympic record for, well, Olympic gold records, of anyone ever. Species and instinctual imperatives aside, parellels are nearly straight-line. Therein lies the rub.
Although key figures and events in both Domain and Earth Prime* (the McCains and Obamas) remain relatively parallel, people like your aunt perish through accident or misadventure while their human counterparts remain alive. I wonder if on the other side of Alice's mirror there is a tombstone with my name on it. It makes me wonder if there are individuals like yourself that create a point-and-counterpoint; there may be a certain craft to the shuffling of lives across the barrier. So many things could go wrong in the everyday of both individual worlds, who is to say your John F. Kennedy could not have lived to pen memoirs while ours lied in state long before his time? What is keeping things on the path they travel. The cabal of birds have left, at least it seems that way -- is this just inertia? Who is to say that people like yourself aren't part of a mechanism that keeps our worlds separate but peculiarly equal? Lots of questions; sorry to be so heavy-handed. On much a lighter note, Speaking of Google searches, what species are Sergei and Larry? I'm guessing the that likes staying out of the sun. XD Do you guys have World of Warcraft (or something similar) in your world? And what about "The Legend of Zelda?" I think the main character in Zelda would be a wolf, or a pink rabbit...
Judging by your living arrangements, college-wise, I'm guessing either Joan didn't get accepted to Beige, is waiting for funding, or will simply room on her own. Which makes sense, come to think on it. Committed couple or not, it's best to live apart until that ring goes on her finger. Or horn, assuming Rachel wants to get flashy.
Jumanji's answer is easiest. Yes. We do have World of Warcraft and Zelda. Most games (Sonic excluded) have main characters that can be adapted to match the player's.
Chistery raises a lot of questions to which I can only speculate. Sadly, though, in our world as well JFK died on Nov. 22, 1963. What species are the Google guys? Very busy beavers. Signing off...See you all next week! Beavers may act busy, but truth is they are lazy good for nothings... (I should know, i use to captain a ship that had 3 on board).
Also i found a wonderful place to eat with the duo. Cafe Centipede, right on the edge of my town (Darwin). So the two "Picky Eaters" should be able to get what they want. I'm also looking for an online dating service, anyone know any good ones for Mix species relationships? Have you tried OK Cupid? They seem pretty friendly to whatever grouping your instincts take you; in fact, I think some of the Harvard graduates who created it have ties to the Interspecies Support Group. I've also heard that Plenty of Fish is good, but I'm not on it myself -- meaning no offense to any fish who might be reading this, I'd much rather eat fish than date them!
"Beavers may act busy, but truth is they are lazy good for nothings...."
That may be disputed: I have heard that they may be useful in less obvious ways. To quote one of our great Human writers, Lewis Carroll: "There was also a Beaver, who paced on the deck, Or would sit making lace in the bow, And had often (the Bellman said) saved them from wreck, Though none of the sailors knew how." Judging that your ship did not suffer disaster on that voyage (based on the fact that you are here to recall it), I believe your beavers, perhaps, might indeed have earned their keep. - LA/wts Mine were indeed lazy, but with a crew of 45 we were fine (I almost tossed them off but I'm not that mean).
as for the portals i don't consider them super natural. What do you consider them then? They're hole's in space that take you to other worlds, some of which have rather active supernatural elements such as ghosts, vampires, magic, dragons, etc.
Ok Igot onto a dating service and this is what I put down.
Name: Reptileus Concarna Age: 38 Species: Komodo Dragon Eye color: Brown Place of Birth: Djakarta, Island of Jawa, Indonesia Diet: Omnivore, Eats plants and animals. Current Place of residence: 43 Darwin Street, Township of Domain, USA Current Job: Security guard for the Clearing, Teacher for Summer survivalist training Hobbies: Hunting, Survival teaching Likes: Alcohol, Cartoons, Newspapers, sailing, boating, movies (Horror, Comedy) Dislikes: Winter, Super natural forces, Rodents Interesting facts: *Became Omnivore in 1881 after talking to pray widow Migrated to US in 1992, became a legal US citizen in 1998 Due to poisonous saliva, is able to drink large amounts of alcohol with out getting drunk. (But starts feeling Tipsy after 114 Shots.) 2 minors in possession (1 arctic fox, 1 super intelligent Gila Monster who has Ichthyophobia) Seeking: Female Canine Companion And....that's as far as i got... you guys tell me if i should change somthing. Not bad. Maybe change the 1881 part?
Unless you've got time machines or something. That would definitely explain a few things on this end... If you dislike supernatural forces, what are you doing portal-hunting man? More often than not those things lead to places full of the supernatural.
I can't really think of anything that needs changing, but then again, I've never used a dating site. Kinda hard to maintain a steady relationship when you rarely spend more than a week in one place, ya know? Lindesfarne, I'll echo the others from earlier: you've answered a lot of our questions, we'd be happy to return the favor... anything you'd like to know?
"You should asked her what level of Weaponry they have in the human world. I heard that the only way a humans could defend themselves was by laying waist to the other habitats. Any truth to that?"
Not really. If a human wants to live in an area with large carnivores around, a gun would be recommended. In the past, habitats could be devastated by careless resource harvesting, notably strip-mining for coal. Today, there are laws and regulations to help protect the enviromnent in democratic countries, though undemocratic ones tend to have few, if any, such rules. ah the 1881 thing was a typo. All fixed. Now to just upload the darn thing...
And no I do not have a time machine... FEU was never able to find one. drops jaw
"There's a book of portal locations? Absolutely delightful. Keep it safe. Perhaps, if there is an update ever to be performed on it, I feel that Maybel and Emma Seal, the sisters that had the unfortunate event of breaching the ice covering and falling into the Antartic portal, be recorded into it. While there's always a possible hope that they survive in that other realm, dimension, world...gateway to...well, whatever it is, I can only imagine the worse case situation. As for reading through some of the postings from the Human world, I find it highly terrifying to see of some of these weapons that are mentioned by Koronak. Perhaps, my earlier stated desire to visit the Human world was with the dreamy desire to find a world that held more balance and might have even been safer. Pardon my explorative mindset, if it's taboo or personal or something along those lines. But, do Humans have to rely on weapons to feel safe? Do they keep such items near hoof...no, Humans have hands...near hand to survive?" Several of us do rely on weapons such as guns, but very few of us fell completely safe around them. There are several people who don't need any type of weapon to defend themselves, and even more who are fortunate enough to not need to defend themselves.
I personally, since I often do have to defend myself, prefer hand-to-hand unarmed combat, or failing that, knives. short blades such as knives fulfill roughly the same task as claws and teeth when it comes to a fight. Nothing beats the real thing though. It's Just like my days in Indonesia... I know i need to relay more on just by Poisonous saliva and claws when i was growing up there. One of the Few memories of my Father was him giving me his old sword.
I think even in this world, some people just want to feel a little more protected. I'm certain there are others in this world who hide guns under there pillows. Say Lindesfarne, I hope you don't mind my asking this, but since you often discuss political issues I wanted to get your opinion. What are your views on libertarianism?
