Sunday, August 3. 2008HUMANS!!!
My brain is still swimming from making actual contact with the human world; even more so at the revelation that the adventures of my family make for entertainment on that side. (About ten years ago there was a movie out called “The Truman Show.” Did the human world have something like that?) I guess I should be relieved that our doings are regarded by most as fictional.
I’m looking forward to chatting with everyone on Sundays. I’ll have to limit myself to one day per week owing to potential instinct loss from human contact. Last Sunday I felt myself losing my insectivore appetite as the time went on, but I felt better after good day’s sleep and had a big plate of glubs for breakfast. Instinct loss seems to be a mental condition rather then one produced by physical transmissions between the portals, but I’m just speculating here. I was worried when Coney suddenly began protecting defenseless creatures; I wondered if this portal contact had affected her instincts. Fortunately no, it turned out to be caused by her friendship with baby Francis. Regardless, this is sure to have wide-ranging effects. Coney is an amazing little predator and now that her talents are directed towards protecting others she may seek a career in law enforcement...or superheroism! (Do you humans have “Batman” movies over there?) Of course, Gran will probably think she’s becoming a herbivore. I wish I could respond personally to all the comments that came in during the week! One person asked about time passage in our world. The best that I could say is that it’s the same as yours; One year=12 months=365 1/4 days. Also, if any of you happen to see Nick and Ki, say hello to them for me! One final thing; it seems that even a few people from my side of the portal were able to access my blog all this time...despite all of my safeguards! I just hope I didn’t say anything that caused trouble; I’m thinking of the arrest of Mr. Squirrel recently. Yes, it was the press coverage from rescuing the kitten that led to his unmasking, but I shouldn’t have been so careless. I also hope Fenton’s parents haven’t read what I’ve said here! So, the floor is open! Any comments? Trackbacks

I haven't posted before because I felt it rude to do so when you couldn't see my posts.
I have an amateur hypothesis on instinct loss based on observations here in the human world. Instinct loss may well work both ways: A human in your world or any major human influence (such as Rudy's comic)would cause widespread instinct loss, which would be immedately noticeable. Someone from your world here would most likely cause an instinct gain, however we would be unlikely to notice it as such and attribute it at first to healthy lifestyles and then to evolution. These phenomena would likely be caused by some imbalance that I do not currently have the scientific knowledge to describe, but could be balanced in a similar fasion to chemical equations, as evidenced by your and Danielle's places in the human world being taken by the two birds. Unfortunately I cannot test this hypothesis alone, and feel that it would not be particularly wise to do so at all. contact between the worlds ought to be kept to a minimum, for the good of everyone involved. Now then, I'm starting to get an irrational craving for raw meat, so let me log off for a bit. I'm in agreement with tsukos, as I suspect the imbalance between the portals is a crucial point. Speaking of which, did a Catherine Aura and her son Nigel ever appear in the human world?
Well, not that I can confirm myself. However, if the comics are accurate, they apparently showed up in the form of another species: dolphins.
Which, in and of itself, is somewhat interesting in my opinion. The humans of our world have always considered the dolphins to be one of the most intelligent of the other species in our world, but because they don't use to anywhere near our level technology, nor do we communicate to anywhere near the level that the species in your world do, we have generally assumed they aren't sapient. We have never been able to confirm this, however, and they have been able to learn to understand some human sign language and -- in some rare cases -- use basic tools. As a result, Aura and her son may be an exception to normal dolphins, with the two of them being of higher intelligence than normal... or that species may have higher intelligence than we thought. Perhaps Douglas Adams (a famous science-fiction author here on the human side of things) was on to something with this comparison of humans and dolphins he wrote once:
"Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man -- for precisely the same reasons." From a personal standpoint on the issue, I'd have to side with the dolphins on this one. Some of the things we humans have done over the ages make me wonder if intelligence is an unnatural phenomenon for us. O.o; Regardless of how intelligent they may be, cetaceans (dolphins and their whale cousins) cannot have technology like ours for the simple reason that any advanced technology requires metal (not only for the end results but for the tools needed to make it), and metal requires fire (for refining the ores, smelting, etc.), and there’s this little problem with fire in the cetaceans’ natural habitat….
Also, wielding tools requires grasping hands (preferably with opposable thumbs), and that is literally beyond the grasp of cetaceans, since they have no grasp. As for language, cetaceans may have something much better: the ability to “shape” their own sonar pulses to create sonar imagery in the minds of any other cetacean within earshot. This would allow them to instantly describe any concrete concept that could be expressed in sonar imagery, without the need for cumbersome nouns and adjectives and other grammar. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much more so an animated 3D sonar image? It would effectively be telepathy, without requiring any metaphysical claptrap, all based on actual acoustic physics! Who needs language when you have that!? Hello again,
Yes, we did have "The Truman Show" movie too. "Batman" movies and comics as well. In the latter, he's as human as anyone else though does rely on a number of gadgets. DB Cooper is still at large over here. As to how you ended up on someone's comic, the only thing I have to offer is a theory by a character in a webcomic I came across. She theorized some people had some odd psychic connection to another universe, and a few used that as artistic inspiration for drawing or writing. It sounds crazy, but for the moment, it's the only explanation I have. As for Aura and Nigel, the "entertainment" showed them as appearing as dolphins (and happy with it). Then again, perhaps that was some kind of trick to cover their tracks. By the way, are you able to access any of the weblinks you see here? If so, you might be able to access some online encylopedias and news websites. Good luck with your research, It is funny you mention D. B. Cooper still being at large; before realizing that that Lindesfarne's world had a similar hijacking (right down to a computer-aged face of that D. B. Cooper matching the current felon's face) I wondered if that was how this world's D. B. Cooper 'got away.' Falling through a portal would explain his complete disappearance, including most of his money, with all that law enforcement looking for him.
Lindesfarne, I hope you don't mind us looking in on your family and friends. We tend to root for them to overcome any obstacles that come along, if that softens the invasion. I was rather surprised that two scavengers, contented (almost smug) about their diet, became dolphins happily. But I suppose the instinct goes with the form... Hey! Maybe that is the secret to the imbalance in the 'instinct-loss' phenomenon! YOU have no humans over there - any addition of human-like attributes would be noticeable - possibly devastating. WE have animals here - any leakage of your instincts to us would naturally go to them, becoming a few more drops in an ocean, so to speak. Well, you are the scientist - what do you think? Love, Stephanie Um, Lindesfarne? You do realize you are asking if just two people appeared on a whole world with billions of beings, right? If they did, who knows where they would be!
Hello, Lindesfarne, and welcome!
Quick question for you -- (Some background -- I'm an American living in Japan teaching English, so naturally I'm curious about certain pop culture things...) Is Japanese anime and manga becoming popular in the west there? Do you have companies like Viz, Dark Horse Comics and Funimation, bringing Japanese culture to the English speaking world? I was going to ask about video games, but I see that there is a Nintendo Wii at your parents place... Thanks much for your time! That would be Nick Wellington and Ki Oshiro, who work for General Protection Fault Software somewhere in the United States. Now, Nick and Ki may be married by now, but that's just conjecture.
So the webcomic shows Ms. Aura and Nigel turning into dolphins? That makes sense, as swimming through water is similar to flying through air. I don't know much about swimming, but I do have experience with flight. I hope they are happy and content, as they enabled Danielle and myself to stay here. As for the links on the messages, I just get directed to the Domain equivalents of them. To the question about Japanese animation, yes, it's very big here. In fact, Fenton and I going to a huge anime/manga convention in Baltimore next weekend, so next week's blog may be a bit late. And yes, all of those companies exist over here.
I'm glad to hear that your instincts aren't being permanently damaged by interacting with the human world. Regarding Nick and Ki, yep, it looks like they are alive, well and happily married (October 2007).
Nick and Ki married! Wonderful! Do you know them?
Not personally, only by reputation. I was able to get some info on them from google (an internet search engine). If you want I'll see if I can get in touch with them and point them in the direction of your blog
I'm not so sure Nick & Ki can reply directly here -- as it turns out, in our universe, they also appear as characters in a Webcomic (just like your family does). It's been rumored that the artist/writer responsible for them somehow has a direct mental channel to their universe, just like the artist/writer responsible for your webcomic apparently has a direct mentalc hannel to your universe. However, their universe is apparently not our universe, although both are apparently human-based, whereas yours is animal-based.
That being said, I left a pointer to your weblog posting, over in the forums discussing them. (And, both artist/writers had alternating pieces of your encounters together in their comics for some period of time -- it was quite interesting to see.) There are advantages to having a husband whose virtual reality machine can be easily converted into a interdimensional transport. My primary concern is... who pays for the bandwidth?
Yes, Nick & I are married now. Although, as with many things that seem to happen in our lives, the wedding didn't go... smoothly. Way too complicated to go into in a blog comment. I think Nick still has the coordinates for your universe.... Maybe, if he hasn't been burnt out on dimension hopping already, we could come by for a visit? Recent... events have understandably of put him off on using the MUTEX, so it might take a while to convince him. But being married also makes convincing him a whole lot easier.... Well put pookel, just be careful at tempting Nick to use the Inventor's Gene again... next thing you'll know Nick'll be dressed in black robes muttering about level 9 Kamehameha black magic spells and you dressed as a white mage with a huge hammer...

Dear Lindesfarne,
First off, you most likely have noticed that I originally tried to post this last night, in response to a year-old post. I'm not nocturnal, and really shouldn't have been online at that time of the night. (Speaking of which, isn't it early afternoon where you are? ) I'm so glad that you're finally able to receive the replies we make to your blog posts (there have been replies made all along). I don't know about you, but as for me, I'm going to assume that this is a temporary state of affairs; sooner, rather than later, someone will detect the network traffic emanating from the portal, and will decide to intervene. If I'm wrong, and the transmissions (including return transmissions) are as secure as you believe, I'll have no complaints, but in any case I intend to enjoy the situation for however long it lasts. This might seem strange, but I wanted to mention that there are a number of questions I'd like to ask you, which I am going to refrain from asking. As has been mentioned, the life of your family appears on this side as a webcomic. Three panels a day, seven days a week (double sized on Sunday), is hardly enough to even begin to offer a summary of one person's life. To depict even the highlights of your entire family's day to day activities, I'd assume that there's a great deal of abridgement and simplification going on. Asking you to expand on what's in the comic would be an unnecessary and most likely confusing invasion. I might feel like I know you already, but I have to accept that this is our first "meeting" and that what I "know" about you already could easily be wrong. By the same token, I'd hesitate to mention events that have or will take place in the webcomic, of which you would be unaware (if events occurred as depicted), if for no other than reason than that I'd rather not tamper with a good thing. Being able to communicate with you definitely falls into the category of "ain't broken". You probably know the short story of the person who built a crystal radio that magically put him in touch with his dead father fifty years in the past... Events in your world might not effect mine, but why take that kind of chance? Incidentally, one of the things I do want to mention is that though this is a "human world", it almost certainly is not THE "human world" from which you originally came, nor that of Nick and Ki (who are also webcomic characters over here). That's all I'll post for now. Word of the two-way breakthrough has been getting around, and I wouldn't be surprised if traffic more than doubles from last week. May those who watch the portal be asleep at the switch. All the best. There is one question I've had about your world in comparison to ours. There are some species, like the javan tiger, dodo bird, moa (all of them), and haast's eagle which no longer exist in our version of Earth, largely due to... well, us. I was just wondering if they were still around over there -- without our interference -- or if events conspired to cause the same fate.
For various reasons, none of those species exist any longer, sad to say.
Hmm... I have to say, I didn't entirely expect that one. It seems like our two worlds are more similar than one would expect. The same cities in many places, the same species, the same trends, the same events (we're having gasoline trouble over here, too, as an example), and even versions of the same individual existing in both worlds.
In many ways, it almost seems that the population of our world is like a splitting of yours: half of what I have seen going to humanity, half going to the other species of our world. I'm not sure what that means, but... just thought I would pop in and say hi!
Welcome to (back) to human Contact Princess Lindesfarne (should I use that?) The Question that I have for you is this. Are the sports the same there as here? baseball, football, racing and the like. Do you have things like Rodeos there? I have so many questions. I havnt seen these comic of your life. but have seen things like hockey with daisy as the goalie. I find your world truly amazing! And wishing that I could find the portal to there. I belive I would be happier there than here. It just seems like a better place in all honesty. Again. Welcome! Am looking forward to sundays now to see what you wrote! Ghost Yes, the two worlds do seem to have a lot in common. Gas here is $3.85 a gallon, down from over $4.00 a week ago.
As for sports, that's more of Rudy's department. I'm sure his hunting competitions aren't the same as in your world, as so much depends on the strategic use of fangs, claws and scent detection. That said, we do also have basketball, baseball, hockey, etc., and the Olympics are just around the corner. This year they're in China! BTW, here there is a spiritual leader known as the dalai lama. He's a panda. Jumanji here, from your last post.
We have a Dalai Lama as well. He's one of the philosophical people I watch and learn from, but I haven't heard much since I first heard of him nervous laugh You know, it might be possible to play Nintendo Games over Wi-Fi between our worlds, if the Internet can be shared between two dimensions, why not Wi-Fi? I'm interested in paranormal research (just for fun) and I once read a story of two soldiers somewhere in the western states spying a half-human, half-bat thing. Since I started reading the comics, and now being able to contact your world, do you think such a creature came from your world? Actually, hunting competitions aren't really that big here. Ok, they do exist, but not nearly to the same level as in your world. What few we do have are in large part archery, fishing (mind you, we use fishing poles or nets most of the time), and shooting -- given the fact that we'd be toast if we got too close to animals we hunt, we generally don't bother. Plus, lot of our food -- meat and plant-- is raised specifically to be eaten in the last few centuries, so many couldn't hunt well if they wanted too.) Basketball, football and the like are really big here, though, and automotive racing has a fair enough following.
Anyway, I find myself dreaming of other worlds a great deal (not that it's all that unusual for me, but...), so I'd better head off as a safety precaution. Hasta luego! That business of raising meat specifically for consumption...that sounds a little like Domestication. Hmmmm...
I'm signing off as well for another week. See you next week, after we return from the anime con! I was just wondering if you'd ever return to that theme park as an exhibit, now that Coney is getting more reigned in.....and what would happen if Fenton decided to pay a visit?
Yes, we have the Truman Show, and Batman is and always will be awesome (though your version is probably much more... species appropriate. Who played the Joker on your end?)
And $3.85 a gallon gas? lucky you, we're paying $4.25 here. As regards Mr. Squirrel... There's speculation here that he's dead, about a decade back. There was a woman married to a guy who claimed to be our side's D.B. Cooper, and was mentioning information off-hand that was pretty unusual. Well, he had on facepaint in our version, but IIRC the Joker for the latest Batman movie was played by a hyena (or possibly a jackal; there was a lot of makeup too). Maybe I need my eyes checked again!
(About ten years ago there was a movie out called “The Truman Show.” Did the human world have something like that?)
Yep. But keep in mind that we aren't directing your life. You aren't trapped anywhere, and we've been trying to tell you that we can see you, so it's not quite a perfect analogy. (Do you humans have “Batman” movies over there?) Yep, but he's not really a bat, he's a human in a dark winged suit. Most of our superheroes are either human or domesticated canine (beagles are popular currently) Re: time passage... It seems to be measured the same, 365 days in a year with a leap day every fourth year... But does time pass at the same rate... Everyone on your side of the portal seems to age much slower than anyone here. You should connect to a time server in the human world, and see if units of time are actually equivalent. I assume from what I've observed, time may pass faster here. 20 human seconds to one multi-species second could be possible. Then again, time is relative, and perhaps time could pass exactly the same in both of our worlds, but instead the portal could possess a time-dilation side-effect... :/ Also, perhaps if the instinct loss does prove to be a psychological malady, maybe it could help to clear your mind of the thought of humans as much as possible, and instead think of us as chimpanzees from another country (IIRC, chimpanzees are the closest genetic match to humans). Speaking of chimps, I'd wager that our current U.S. President is actually a chimpanzee that popped through the portal. Now, don't worry about us so much, if you feel at all strange while chatting through the portal, take a break, fly with Fenton, and treat yourself to some delicious bugs! (I'll stick to my insect-free omnivore diet.) Best wishes! Hello again. Unfortunately I can't get online until after you've finished answering - maybe if your blog's a little late next week I can.
I just wanted to ask if you have webcomics over there? Do maybe have a "Fasttrack" company? Or a town called Haven The human who somehow draws your adventures over here also draws two comics for newspapers. You say that you only get directed to links back on your side of the portal - could you give us Rudy's (old?) comic address so we could see what we might find? What do you see when you visit www.kevinandkell.com? Since you appear as a webcomic here, and there are scores of major webcomics, I wonder if each one is a real universe. The multiverse must be pretty weird then. There is one where humans and animals are in a state of conflict, with psychic abilities thrown in...it is called "Gene Catlow". One where dragons are significant people, much like birds seem to be in your world..."Ozy and Millie". One set in 2066 with all animals but nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and space flight..."21st Century Fox". One with magic using raccoons in a Medieval society..."Tales of the Questor". And so on.
Also, how does suffrage work in your world? If it is one person, one vote, I would think protozoans would rule everything, as there are so many of them. roflmao! I'm sorry, I just...protozoans politically active?! I'm probably showing my own prejudices here, but protozoans aren't exactly known for being voters. There are a few exceptions (and some of our cartoonists have been known to make political statements by drawing certain politicians as at least part protozoan). That's also why bugs don't rule our world -- well, that and their shorter lifespans.
Hello again, Lindy! I do feel somewhat sheepish that you now know that Domain residents have been able to read your blog, I'd like to think that it's because you can't keep a blog as entertaining as yours a secret (and the cynical part of me chalks it up to computer security never being sufficient, being a tech-head myself I speak with authority). I am, however, old enough (always feeling old!) to know that even though it's public, that a blog is personal. I've noticed you a few times around Domain, but I've never gone "Hey, Lindy! I've read your blog!", before or after your blog became "open". Judging from the way life has been going around Domain (old prejudices still intact, etc.) it doesn't seem like your blog is much-read around here anyways, otherwise your window on a mixed-species family will change a lot of attitudes around here (possibly creating a town-wide, or even world-wide forum of understanding and tolerance! Yikes! Can you imagine?), like it has changed my attitudes.
hi again
so it actually works this is amazing. i wish that i cold wisit there som day and i know its possible but unfotenaly weary ulikely. any way i wonder how simular ar the video games there like in our world like mario or the legend of zelda. I just realized some thing, if you live in america and the time there is the same as here pecause i live in finlad and your nocturnal it means that we are awake at the same time an iteresting but useles information any way, GOOD LUCK! ps. if you want more info abot were i am use google earth whit "raakyla" as a seartch word Interesting... Humans... so they do exist... I'll have to keep my eyes open here...
Ay lad, we exist. Some of us even think we're animals. There are actually very few worlds in the multiverse you'll not find us in. Granted, there are also very few worlds where we're the only species too.
Well well well... the Big bad Dragon Lizard is here... Reptileus man waz up.... haven't seen you since... well you were over here telling me about your night guard stuff... which brings to question how you could have posted here if you A) don't own a computer, and B) don't own much of anything...
... What's a human? Aapo, I tried a looking you up on Google Earth, but got nothing. Are you sure that's the correct spelling? After all, you did mis-spell "Finland".
Is it just me, or did anyone else read the title of this post, "Humans!" in the same tone, as it were, as one might say "Zombies!"?
...I bet it was just me. Carry on, folks! With regards to the instinct issue, if any creatures (I say this because the term 'people' does not really apply here) did appear here, most would probably be refered to as either a 'furrie' or an 'anthropomorphic animal'.
Also, do you have a food thing like Quorn over on your side of the portal? I tried it once and I have to say it tasted like Rubber. O.t. Other than the 'Bermuda Triangle' do you suppose there are other such 'portals'? Hey Lindsfarne! I don't have much to say except that here some people keept Hedgehogs as pets. I've even been to a Hedgehog Show (where people show off their prized pets). In German the word for Hedgehog is Igel (pronounced Eagle).
My parents and I had an encounter with a wild hedgehog once in Bavaria. We were sleeping in our tent and my dad heard some rustling outside. My mom opened the tent and looked in a bag of food we had left and found a Hedgehog....but she could only remember the German word for it... "Aww it's an Igel!" and my dad was all like "How'd a bird get in the food bag?!" lol Oh! I have a question! Do you have Dr. Who?? If so is he an Owl?? Just looked in on Aby's energy experiments. If she wants to harness static electricity, she should look into Lord Kelvin's experiments with water-drop generators. Produces ginormous amounts of volts, but virtually no amps, and you still need an inverter to use it with most household appliances. But it's great for recharging batteries.
I do have an answer as to why the security of your blog has been compromised, miss Dewclaw. You must understand that insectivores, such as yourself, cause great distress in the insect world. Some, like well organized and technical savvy termite colonies, see great value in keeping the information flowing. For them, it's a matter of survival for the colony. Being natural burrowers, they take pride in penetrating security measures and fire walls...all the while, hiding their activities. One popular insect created browser is called (*WormHole*). It's patched all the time to go right through the latest in security measures. So, anyone whom learns of this browser can access your secret blog...or, any secured documents that can be touched by remote means. In fact, the browser does this so easily, I bet some of your posters had no idea they were replying to a secured and private blog. The browser breaks through defenses silently and in the background. Ever wonder whom keeps making those worm virii? Well, now you know.
Hello There!
First of all: I'm from the human side. My name isn't really O'Hare, but it is the closest translation of my families name into english (I guess the portal won't translate other human languages than english). I have a question about your family, Lindesfarne, but I really don't mean it racist: Are the people on your fathers side of the family hares or rabbit? Your father is diurnal, his service is called Hare Link and he looks pretty big; but he has to speak in front of the rabbit council. This is somehow confusing. If they are rabbits, has Coney got her myxomatosis shots? On our side of the portal, myxomatosis is a rather big problem since Australian scientists enhanced its hazardousness in order to use it as a biological weapon to "restore" the "original" biological equilibrium of the Australian fauna. Just another good reason to avoid material transfer between our dimensions. I hope nothing like that happened at your site. |
