FURTHER INVESTIGATION

While testing the theoretical portal leakage (I do need to think of the better name for that!), I examined the immediate vicinity of the portals that Fenton and I know about within a fifty mile radius of Domain. I was looking for electromagnetic signals and background radiation that were not detectable elsewhere. Astonishingly, I did locate some around one portal that I know goes back to the mid-20th century of our own world. The signals turned out to be from ham radio operators, and since I don’t want to change the past in any way I’m not going to send any signals back.
So, to quote Jamie and Adam on “Mystbusters,” this can be filed under “Plausible.” The signals carrying my blog don’t go near that portal I tested, but come close to one whose destination is a mystery to me. As a regular viewer of the various “Stargate” series I’m reticent of poking my head through there; who knows what’s on the other side???
The question now is whether to continue this blog. After some consideration I’ve decided that I will. I enjoy writing it, and I doubt that it would have any significant effect on any universe that stumbles across it!
Meanwhile, it’s shedding season for everybody. On the way back from testing that portal I accidentally shed some quills that rained down on Rudy. He did have a point; hedgehogs really weren’t suppose to fly.

Ah but does have an effect. Laughter from self reflection can always have a positive effect. Everything I have read up has been so. It really seems to help you, that is keep you in good spirits. If our two worlds are truly intertwine, linked in a way, then your reflection of good nature will come back to you.
What I am saying is I just stumbled across this port and I do not want to give it up!
Thanks you had me worried last week!
Of course knowing you could write back? Now that might throw things off a bit. But like you I am just throwing my gratitude out there without a worry of getting a response and just believing I might be the only one to read this.

While the possibility of portals to a 'Human' dimension is of great theoretical interest, I doubt that anyone would seriously want to visit such a place. Can you imagine how dull it must be with only ONE intelligent species?

I do, however, hear from some engineer acquaintances that there is some research in progress towards containing this leakage; though it may take some time before they perfect the 'Portal-Potty' 7@=Q

I'd think it would be of historical interest to listen at the other portal Lindesfarne mentioned. So many of the young cubs can't even imagine what life was like when their parents and grandparents were growing up. I'd think eavesdropping on ham radio signals from the 1950s of Domain would give them a better idea -- and give the whole thing more immediacy for them. After all, as I understand it, ham radio was in a sense the "Internet" of its era. At the very least, it was an old school version of "live chat"!

And many ham radio operators helped save lives.

The interesting questions are twofold:

1) What effects do the signals have outside the portal, that is, could this prersonal diary be tapping into a theoretical "other world internet". If so, that profides an additional curiosity: why can't things leak through the other direction. My only guess is that there is some sort of dispersion going on: signals must be a requisite strength to pass through the portal without being distorted, which makes sense.

But it is still curious that an internet signal might make its way to an 'other world' internet.

2) Is there any amplification/loss effect of signals when traveling through the portal? I cannot speak to this last, although I imagine there might well be.

Oooh, Stargate. I used to love that show! But after "Mcgyver" left, I just lost interest.

Wow, ham radio! My dad is a ham radio operator (and, contrary to the school-yard joke we've all heard growing up in Domain, no he is not of the porcine persuasion. In fact, of all the hams I know either by myself or through my dad only one is in fact, "ham" (that is, he is a pig. And yes, he gets kidded about being a "ham" radio operator mercilessly)) You share my feelings as to ham radio being the Internet "of it's day" (hesitant to use that word as, since I pointed out, ham is still alive and well in the Internet era), and as a young cub I was keen on following in my dad's footsteps and even took the test for my basic operator's license, but couldn't get the handle on the electronic knowledge portion (whereas Dad is a whiz in electronics, having operated his own electronics business for years and is a Certified Electronics Technician). Shortly after that (in the 1980s, so was still eons ahead of most people I know) I discovered the 'net and that became my "ham radio" and I didn't need a license. Now that I see the types of people that are on the 'net (not you of course!) I'm starting to think a license is a Very Good Idea indeed.

I'd probably be more adventurous with a portal to another world myself. Now from Stargate I'd say don't go unprepared, no matter what may be behind it- a world full of humans, dinosaurs, or aliens like those from the series.
Then again, that means expecting the unexpected. I think you're more likely the kind of person to investigate and experiment without causing (too much) change in what you're looking at.
By the way, shedding a layer of scales isn't as messy as fur...and probably not as dangerous as quills (ouch, raining quills sounds painful...)

You have to keep a sharp eye on those Ham Radio operators!! They are everywhere, even in Monroe. My Dad use to have a sign posted near his antennae: "Danger! Unprotected Personnel Subject To Hazardous Radiation." Which simply meant that if you run around naked you might get sunburned.

Hey, some of us are STILL Hams! Even some of us gryphons. And Hams still save lives. We are still the official secondary line of communication during a national or other major disaster. Before anyone else brings it up, we WERE there during 9/11 and Katrina.
